EC-121 Decals Needed
Posted by ipmsfl on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 7:11 PM

I am looking for the EC-121 decals that were on the decal sheet created for the 1986 IPMS National Convention.  I'll take the whole sheet but I really only need the markings for the EC-121.  I'm willing to pay a reasonable compensation for the markings.

Which Connie are you thinking of doing?

I'm getting together decals for a connie from Korat.  They didn't have the upper dome.

I think that I've got some decal scraps you might be able to use.

Could you send a picture of your subject?  If  you want, I'll see what I can do.

When I did mine, I picked through the spares and found everything I needed...the one I did had very few markings.  Remember...they didn't exist. Whistling [:-^]

IIRC, the Connies from Korat (the Bat Cat) were radio relay aircraft which picked up the signals from the seismic and acoustic sensors deployed along the roads in Laos. to detect truck and troop movements.  The signals were relayed to Nakhon Phanom, Thailand for analysis.  Then the coordinates were relayed to me and other guys aboard EC-130 airborne command and control aircraft who put in airstrikes on the targets.  They were in the standard SEA dark green-medium green-tan over light gray color schemes.  No radomes on the top or the bottom IIRC.

Anyway, I wasn't doing any of those.  I was going to do one of the ones deployed to Iceland in the late 1970's which had the last 3 digits of the tail number on the nose gear doors in Day Glo orange with black outlines. Those are the markings I'm looking for.

Here's the one I plan to build. The a/c in the photo is a repainted Navy a/c, but the idea is correct. I have a upper/lower dome set from OzMod for the Heller L1049, a kit whose family is very familiar to me (I have 5).

I would give the airline decals to anyone who wants them.

Bill,

I am doing the Revell EC-121 (1/128 scale) but want to do it in the markings of Triple Nickle - ACW aircraft from Vietnam now in the USAF Museum.  Do you have any contacts for the EC-121 decals for this AC?

Regards,

Steve

I don't anymore.

My project is/was for the 1/72 Heller kit.

The old Revell boxscale kit, no idea.

That 1/72 project hasn't happened yet.

As Seastallion mentioned, Caracal has 2 sheets for the EC-121, one has recently been reprinted which has similar markings to those you are looking for: http://caracalmodels.com/cd72022.html

Those sensors were "planted" along the "roads" cut through the jungle and weaved through Combodia and Laos, but we were NEVER there. We never did LRRPs in those other countries, nor did we ever do ambush patrols, nor call in air strikes on the NVA convoys. Are there any Connies still flying? I heard that a commercial (TWA) Connie has been restored and is flying. Are any military Connies still being used?
