Finished: P-38L-5-LO Lightning
Posted by MaxPower on Sunday, May 24, 2009 9:03 PM

This is the Trumpeter kit in 1/32 scale, built straight from the box. Painted in Alclad polished aluminum, white aluminum and dark aluminum. This model had some fit issues and at it was hard to finish because I got so bored with all the filling, sanding scribing blah blah. It was sucking my will to live!! I won out at the end of the day though and I'm very happy with it. This is my first NMF so that just goes to show you how amazing that stuff is.

Check that finish out... Alclad rules

Just in time for our local contest next weekend!!

Love the finish, she look's great. I really like the rivet detail too. The only negs I got, the ailerons are anlged a bit too much, and the control yoke is cocked to the wrong side.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to take away from your thread, the plane is beautiful. But I respectfully disagree, about the yoke. It's turned to left, the port aileron is up and the starboard one is down, that to me is a roll to the right ( as opposed to a turn) due to the rudder's being straight. I'm not a pilot though, I could be wrong. And really, I do not want to take away from your beautiful build, good work on the NMF, especially on the first try. I couldnt do it.

Nice work, Max, and good luck with your local contest.  Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]  Max is correct - a yoke to the left will lift the left aileron for a bank to the left.

Max, having that kit as a WIP since 2005, you definately have my respect. Not only did you tackle it (and I can verify the fit issues), you absolutely conquered it with the NMF...that's the bee's knees! The shine is enough to drool over...you gotta love Alclad. Seriously Max, that's an awesome jopb you did. THe kit has some fit issues, but the overall detail OOB is phenominal. My hats off to you, sir.

Nice job on a real crappy kit. I know because I built it last summer. I could not even tell you how many hours I spent sanding the rear of the cowl panels to get them to even come close to the front edge of the wing where they meet. All rivet detail completly wiped out. The enjoyment factor of the kit rated about a 2 on a scale of 1-10 for me. The interior was a big let down in this scale to. very sparse on the detail. That alclad finish is amazing. Well done on a tough kit.

Oh I know guys I'm telling you I almost gave up on that kit a few times but it cost so much money I was too cheap too! The engines into the boomes... terrible fit. The booms to the wings... terrible fit. Every seam I sanded required replacing rivets. Gah!! I didn't get excited about the kit untill the first coat of Alclad was on it. It was my first Trumpter. Tell me they are not all like that?

Next on the bench is Tamiya 1/32 F-16CJ. I am hoping to find some modeling zen with it. :)

That's a beauty. And pardon my ignorance, but is that hand giving the bird, or just pointing at something? I hope it's the former. :-)

Nice job, I like it.  And the yoke/aileron displacement is correct.

Yupper, it is... Sorry, Jeremy... The yoke being turned to the left will raise the left aileron/lower the right, thereby dropping the left wing/raising the right for a left bank...

That said, the NMF is a beauty...

I've not built this kit so I am unfamiliar with the kit's fit issues.  But I see no evidence of any fit issues here, whatever they are you have undoubtedly conquered them.  Your P-38 is a jaw dropper.  She's absolutely gorgeous.  Alclad is the best stuff I've seen when done correctly, and you sir, have done everything wonderfully.

Now that is a seriously stunning job youve done there. Ive heard nothing but bad things about that kit, but from looking at your job on it, youd never guess. The alclad paint job is the icing on the cake. The various shades really set it off and against the black anti-glare panels.....Awesome.

Good luck at the comp. She looks like a winner to me. Just make sure you write Trumpeter on the card with the model, in LARGE letters LOL.

My tip for you would be to do a good job on your gloss black primer coat. It can't be too smooth! Also if you paint other Alclads on top of a shiny one they will have very poor adhesion. I painted the polished aluminum first and then the white aluminum. When I masked off for the black the white lifted terribly and I had to redo it. The black around the wing fillet doesn't look as clean as it did the first time.

Thanks for the comments and contest well wishes. I have three for the contest that F4 I did (There's a thread here somewhere... it's stunning as well. :D ) and a Kawasaki Ninja.

Very grand indeed!  Aside from the giving a big ditto on the incredible paint job comments I must say that is a tough kit! Very impressive build all round! Bow [bow]

looking at the Rolls Royce emblem and then the P38, I had to laugh a little bit. Rolls Royce is now the owner of the Allison Engine Company that made the engines for that bird! Although the other half of Allison still claims the V1710 as well. Anyway I've been hearing rumors that Rolls Royce?Allison is seriously thinking about starting a museum dedicated to products built with the two name plates. That bird would look like a gem there.

Dave,

Wow! I need the sunglassesCool [8D] for this one. The NMF is awesome. You've inspired me to try the Alclad on my 1/48 Tamiya P-51D.

Good luck on the contest.

When I was in gas turbine school I learned on the Alison 250. Now I'm all about the Rolls Royce, I overhaul and repair RB211's. So I went big. :D

Who's Dave?? lol. You'll love spraying the Alclad. If you get a good gloss black primer coat the alclad is a ton of fun to spray.

Thanks again guys. The P38s still on my bench I can't stop staring at it!!

I remember the first time I ever went in the plant over over (63 acres under one roof!). Got a phone call a little after midnight asking me questions about how to fix a machine (guy loaded the tool holder in the spindle upside down). So I just jumped in the car and went over there. I got thru the guard shack OK because my ID card was good over there, but nobody showed up to pick me up! I wondered around in there for about an hour and a half, and saw what must have been fifty 250 turbines waiting for test in one area alone. Then I went into this area where they were assembling TF41's and TF56's, and damned near went to jail! Anyway I tell them I'm there to fix a machine, and these guys have never heard of the kind it was (there was only one at plant 5), so I said hey I'm leaving and you guys can figure it out on your own. Ten minutes later about a half dozen people show up looking for me. Fix the machine in about twenty minutes for them and head back north. Man that was a big place and so easy to get lost in. And I almost forgot! They blew up a turbine set in that crazy 100K rpm test! Shook the whole building as I was leaving (like a 500lb. bomb went off two hundred yards away!)
