I think they are beautiful, I love that bird <end transmission>

2 very nice builds.  As far as the silvering goes, if its not going to be in a contest youare your own worst critic.

Thanks O!  I have seen those Steel Beach covers at Sprue Bros, but have not tried them.  I wasn't sure how good they would look, but your work with them has sold me.  I shall order some on my next order.  Thanks again! Big Smile [:D]

Thanks for the comments guys!

Frank, I didn't make the covers.  They're from Steel Beach, and I picked 'em up from Sprue Brothers.  They offer a bunch of different colors in different scales, and even different patterns for different aircraft.  These are the ones I got for my 'cats.  They're easy to use and a nice alternative to fighting those nasty intake seams.

Again, thanks for looking gang!

O- I like it!  Aside from the decal issues you mentioned, I can see nothing I would change.  I really like your intake covers, how did you make those?   Overall, a very good looking model.

Hey FSMers,

This is part two of what should've been two Tomcats completed for the Tomcat GB. Unfortunately, I'm barely getting the second attempt completed.

First and foremost, a big thanks to ARCer SonyKen who came to my rescue. I lost some parts to the Carpet Monster (despite having hard wood floors), and Ken was gracious enough to send me what I needed to finish this kit. Thanks Ken!

Now, this is the 1/48 Academy -A offering, basically straight out of the box. (You can see some of the build here.) I used FTD decals, and Steel Beach intake covers and resin covered exhausts. It's painted with MM enamels and weathered with a watercolor and Promodeler wash, and ground up pastels. I know the dorsal antennae are missing. I wanted to leave 'em off until after the photos were taken. I didn't want 'em to get knocked off during the handling.

Unfortunately, like my Monogram build, there is obvious/significant silvering with a lot of the decals. (No need to point that out in your criticisms.) No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the decals to give me that painted on look. The kit was glossed ice smooth, and I followed FTD's decaling directions to the "T." I still had major shriveling and silvering, and some of the decals would just fall off after they dried. I even got to the point where I tried using Future and even diluted white glue in an attempt to get them to stick. Different water temps were even tried. No love. Even after going back and doing the "prick-and-flood" trick, with MicroSol/Set, Solvaset, and even Future, I still couldn't get the all decals to snuggle down. Oddly, despite using the same exact finishing and decaling process, the decals settled better on the Academy kit better than the Monogram kit. Anyway, this isn't a knock on FTD. I have nothing but praise for Brian and the FTD crew. He went above and beyond in helping me with my issues. (Thank you FTD!) I have another set of FTD decals in my stash, hopefully I'll get those right.

Enough of the blah-blah-blah...let's move on to the pix!

Outstanding! I really like how your tomcat turned out. To me, when a Tomcat model reminds me of being back on deck, that's pretty realistic.Make a Toast [#toast]

It was mentioned about the left engine nozzle being closed after shutdown. That was something I never paid attention to, so I went back and looked at some of the photos I took and sure enough that's what one of my photos showed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v669/scurrfy/F-14s/SunDowners.jpg

But I found one that wasn't the case. We had a Tomcat get blown into the catwalk one night and this is how it ended up. That's me in the fashionable tube socks.Laugh [(-D] I guess that's how it looks when you shut the keys off and run.Wink [;)]

Here's tip that's a bit time consuming but ends up looking pretty good. I got tired of ejection handles looking too thick for the scale of the seat, so I stretched some sprue to thread size and made my own handles. Just a thought if you're ever gonna do another one. Again, outstanding work!Cool [8D]Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks for the kinds words everyone.  I'm not 100% satisfied with the way it came out (decals), but to me it looks like a Tomcat.

Jeremy, it looks like the nozzle question was answered, although, I honestly don't know if it was more common to see one nozzle (the left one) closed and the right one open.  So, I'll answer your other question.

Ladder comes with the Monogram kit.  The only thing is, the hatch is molded closed.  So, if you wanna build it with the ladder extended, you have to cut into the fuse.  It's easy enough.  The steps are also molded closed.  If you check out the linked build thread, you can see how I opened the fuse and boxed in the step's areas.  The steps themselves are made with a couple of small squared of plastic sheet.  The non-skid area on the ladder and steps are simply black decals trimmed to fit.  Super easy.

Again, thanks for the encouragement gang.  I'm glad you like 'er.

Cheers!

Well done O, I think you nailed the look of the Tomcat.  Aside from the decal issue, I can see nothing I would change or criticize.  Nice work! Approve [^]

BTW, typically the left engine is the one to be shown in the closed position.  I think.

Nice looking build. Thumbs Up [tup]  I remember the TPS thread over on ARC and I can't find it either!

If i couldnt get the pics to work, from reading your description of the build, id have expected a Nail. On seeing the pics, i reckon your being far too overcritical. This build is a stunner. With a rescribe as well, your a very talented modeller, my friend. Very talented. Shes a honey.

She looks beautiful and the rescribe makes her look even better! Top notch work!Thumbs Up [tup]

It's a shame about the decals. IMO it's the only flaw I can see... but you already knew that and didn't want to hear about it so I said too much already! Banged Head [banghead]

Also, why is one exhaust larger than the other?

I love it... think it looks great! It's good to hear that you had fun and learned something new. Can't wait to see your Academy kitty!

My 2 cents [2c]

Here kitty kitty... (Updated 8/18/09 w/ Academy 'cat)
Posted by oortiz10 on Friday, July 24, 2009 10:44 PM

Hey FSMers,

Just thought I'd show off some pix of my latest build.  This is the Monogram 1/48 Tomcat that I started as one of two for a Tomcat GB.  My plan was to build them as high-viz VF-1 jets.  One was gonna be this Monogram ‘cat done using an old Superscale sheet (that I don't know how it ended up in my decal pile), and the other was gonna be the Academy -A ‘cat with the Eagle Strike decals.  Unfortunately, I didn't get ‘em done by the deadline.

Still, I pressed on...

I had some Tomcat parts in my box-o'-pieces, but I don't ever remember building an F-14.  Ever.  (That would explain the pieces and not a complete jet, and the decals.)  Although after running across FTD's Test Cats sheet and thinking it was just too cool, I figured I'd use these jets to build my own "test ‘cats."  Having never built a Tomcat before, I thought they'd be good projects to try some new techniques on, and thus, worthy of their "evaluators" markings.  (Especially since I got the kits dirt cheap.)

Anyway, enough blah-blah-blah.  How about some pix?

I started by opening up the boarding steps and ladder.

Then, despite not being obvious in some of the pix, I cut the stabilators free to position them in a more relaxed position.  (Thanks FEDE!)

I also tried my hand at rescribing.  I went ahead and rescribed the whole airframe.  (Cover your eyes rivet counters!  I used the kit's raised lines as guides.)

I also made an attempt at painting a distressed TPS scheme.  I went to use the "tutorial" that was pinned in the ARC Jet forum, but couldn't find it.  (Guess I shoulda printed it when I had the chance.)  So, I just winged it.

As a few more "firsts" on this jet, I used Steel Beach's intake covers and fuel tanks.  I had a couple of small problems with the tanks though.  One, the pylons were too short.  They weren't tall enough to extend beyond the height of the tank, attach to the intake, and still leave a bit of a gap between the fuse and tank.  As a result, I had to scratch my own pylons.  Second, there were loads of bubbles marks in my pair.  I started to fill ‘em, but there were just too many.  I figured if I filled them all and sanded the tanks smooth, I'd loose the engraved detail.  So, after filling a few, I just left ‘em.

Lastly, since I hid the disasters that are the intake trunks with SB's covers, I figured I'd hide the inside of the burner cans with homemade FOD covers.  I was gonna use SB's resin "covered cans," but the diameter was significantly smaller than the fuse opening.  So, I ended up using Academy's burners.  They fit a little better, but are still noticeably smaller.  Turns out SB's resin fits the Academy kit better anyway.

I tried to mix a custom color to get ‘em as close to the intake covers as I could.  Looks good enough to me, so I'm fine with it.

Anyway, I know that there is obvious/significant silvering with most of the decals, so you don't have to point that out in your criticisms.  I don't know why, but I had the toughest time with the decals.  Sorry...with the decaling.  Let me clarify...A little while ago, when I was starting the decaling process, I had some issues with the sheet I had.  FTD came to the rescue and provided me with some replacements.  Thing is, the problems persisted.  No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the decals to give me that painted on look.  The kit was glossed ice smooth, and I followed FTD's decaling directions to the "T."  I still had major shriveling and silvering, and some of the decals would just fall off after they dried.  I even got to the point where I tried using Future and even diluted white glue in an attempt to get them to stick.  Different water temps were tried.  No love.  Even after going back and doing the "prick-and-flood" trick, with MicroSol/Set, Solvaset, and even Future, I still couldn't get the all decals to snuggle down.  I don't know what it is/was.  Anyway, this isn't a knock on FTD.  I have nothing but praise for Brian and the FTD crew.  He went above and beyond in helping me with my issues.  (Thank you FTD!)  I only wish I knew what was going on with these decals.  Very likely, it's user error.

Beyond that, this build was a lot of fun.  I learned a lot.  I have much more confidence in my scribing and finishing abilities.  I finally acquired a Hase' Tomcat that I'd like to either finish with another FTD sheet that I have, or maybe the Superscale VF-1 colors.  We'll see.

So, the Monogram kit is finished, but the Academy kit is waiting a generous parts donation from SonyKen.  He's helping me with some parts I lost to the Carpet Monster.  Once the Academy's done, I'll update this thread with some photos of the pair.

Please, drop you two cents in the bucket.  Feel free to shoot me your questions, comments and criticism.  I look forward to your thoughts, and thanks for taking a peek!

Cheers,

-O
