Building "Dogfight Doubles"
Posted by Lufbery on Thursday, December 18, 2003 8:36 AM
Hi all,

Airfix offers (or offered anyway) pairs of kits where each kit represented a plane that was the adversary of the other. Airfix called this a "Dogfight Double." For example, they offered the Roland CII and RAF R.E.8. in one box. Airfix went all out, having figures for the planes and stands to that they could be posed in the midst of a dogfight. It sounds like neat stuff.

Has anyone built his or her own dogfight doubles? For example, I'm building an F-4J that shot down a MiG-21 and hit another. I'd like to build a MiG-21, in proper NVAF markings, to display with this plane. One could do a Hellcat vs. a Zero. Or a MiG-3 vs. a BF-109. AVG P-40 vs. Japanese Hyabusa. The list is endless.

One could even pose the planes in flight relative to one another to give a sense of action to a static display.

What do you folks think?

Regards,

-Drew

I remember those...! Was fun way to display your models. When I still used to hang my models from the ceiling (I stopped that 18 years ago..!), I had plenty of dogfights going on...

yeah, my dogs fought over which one was going to get to the model first after the string became dislodged from the ceiling. Which hound was going to be seen running from my model room with fuselage hanging precariously out of his mouth, drool seeping into the cockpit and unfilled seams, and the characteristic sound of crunching plastic as the canines split the wings and fuselage halves. The other hound would catch up and grab a piece of tail and vertical stabilizer in his mouth and pull. By the time this "dogfight" was over, maybe 15 seconds, the plane was an unrecoverable shell of what it was. Many a pilot was consumed in gustatory delight in these "Dogfights".

An IPMS club I used to belong to had a contest with an "Adversaries" theme. Two modelers would team up to build two models of subjects that had competed against each other. The contest wasn't limited to aircraft, however; it was open to competing race cars, armor, etc.

I thought it was a great idea.

Matt,

That sounds like a great idea! Sherman vs. Tiger, Ford vs. Ferrari, X-wing vs. Tie Fighter, F-8 vs. MiG-17, heck, even Boeing vs. Airbus. I guess the list is endless and crosses all genres.

Part of the challenge might be finding two kits that are appropriate. For instance, I'm not sure exactly which type of Mig-21 would have been shot by the F-4J I'm modeling. I think it's a MiG-21PF that would have been bare metal with red stars in circles for markings, but I'm not sure who makes such a kit or decals in 1/72 scale. I'll need to do more research, but that's part of the fun of this hobby.

Monogram used to produce "dogfight doubles" I have their P-47 Razorback
vs the Do-335 Arrow and the F-86 Saber vs Mig-15. Both are 1/48th kits.

I recall seeing a p-40/zero set from Revell/monogram within the last three years. I also recall attempting a Syrian Mig-21/Israeli F-16 set (from revell?); finished the -21 but lost the intakes to the -16 and ended up chucking it.
