who's kit is it ?
Posted by gregers on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 1:28 PM
i've had a revell 1/72 Saab Grippen for a while now and i recently bought an airfix one (got it cheap so thats why two of the same type). upon opening it it is identicle to the revell one and it seems a bit too good for airfix so i was just wondering who did it originally. cheers in advance. Greg

Only have the Revell kit, but I've never heard about Revell kits sold under the Airfix label...

I've only seen the Revell kit. It built up well and leaves a few openings for improvements.

I had no idea Airfix ever released a kit of it.

I just wish Revell would dust of its 1/32 scale molds of the prototype Gripen and rework them for a production variant.

Can't wait to see aftermarket decal options for the Gripen once South Africa takes delivery of their first one in a few years.

A trusted friend assures me that Airfix did it first. I know, I know, it sounds hard to believe-but he is adament. Strange but true?

not seen the italeri kit so i can't comment but it looks like it could be one of theirs. the airfix kit has markings for the second prototype. is this a kit of the prototype version? cheers. Greg

BTW i'd like to get hold of a 1/32 scale grippen too. Greg

Does it have a pair of small fences on the intakes, one just behind and in line with each canard? If it does, that's a production variant, none of the prototypes had those.

The Revell and Italeri kits represent production Gripens.

I've heard Italeri offers single and two seat Gripens, is that all in the same kit or two different boxings?

Hey Gregers;
Well don't be surprised that the two kits are exactly the same I know Revell/Monograms Pro-Modeler line has Hasegawa's, DML/Dragon, and others for the line, also Revell of Germany owns Matchbox and I think Airfix too but not sure and they contract with Italeri if you look at the Tiger Meet F-16A it's the Italeri kit,also some of the kits Italeri offers are the old Esci moldes since AMT/Ertl was bought out a couple years ago so all the new Italeri kits of the S-3's, Jaguars are the old Esci's
