ME-410 WIP...all done
Posted by fermis on Thursday, July 29, 2010 7:22 PM

Following our great "Capt. Awesome" Chukw, with another 410 is a daunting task, I know. But I was "challenged" to this undertaking, so I'll do my best!!!! This will be a fermis410, not a Chuk410!!!

Starting with Revells boxing, I'll be doing a couple modifications and even using some (gasp!) PE and exausts from quickboost.

While waiting on the goods to go through the mail, I couldn't wait to get started. So, I started by seperating the control surfaces on the tail. The stabs. are molded as one piece, and the elevator lines up perfectly on both sides, making seperation a breeze. The rudder, being molded in the fuse. halves, have do be done seperately, then cemented together.

I seperated them by running the backside of a #11 blade through the groove on the long portions. For the short portions, I used thread, looped over my thumb and wrapped around my index finger.

I also took care of a few bits that are usually relegated to the end of the project, wheels and props. The tailwheek fork was also carved out.

007.jpg

I also decided to add a bit of detail to the bare wheel wells. Most ref. pics I found show the gear doors closed, even with the engines off, so they are staying closed. I carved out the rear and side walls in the kit gearbay and added bits of styrene. I fashioned a basic box with basic details to fill in the rear area.

001-1.jpg

I know, this pic is a bit blown put, it was the only way to see inside.

003.jpg

A few more bits and pieces and it's a little closer to the real thing.....just a little closer!

006.jpg

That is where she sits right now. The goodies arived in the mail yeserday afternoon, so things should start moving along rather quickly (if work will ever let up a bit!!!)

One thing I'm not real crazy about is how the exaust stacks and shroud are molded as one. Most likely, I will end up seperating the stacks, to be added after painting.

004.jpg

This colored PE really looks neat, it's cheating, but what the hell!!!!

Great work so far fermis, though it would be better with some hot cartoon girls! Stick out tongue LOL

I like that idea of using thread to "saw" the short runs of the control surfaces, never even thought of that.  Thanks for the tip!

It doesn't feel like cheating when you're in the middle of cutting and placing those tiny pieces of photoetch.  I think you should do what works.  Every build doesn't have to go the same direction.  Variety in the construction keeps the hobby fresh.  Ultimately we're looking to build a handsome, realistic replica.  Thanks for the WIP.    Rick.

Still fiddlin with some fiddly bits.

Main gears got new brake lines and tiedown? rings. You can also see the tailwheel fork, carved out.

003-1.jpg picture by fermisb

Rudder trim tab got some new actuators. I carved out a groove for the actuator rod with this cheap carving tool. The mounting bracket for the rod is folded aluminum.

Micro drill bits don't have to be turning to enter your thumb!!!!Embarrassed

It's been nearly five years since I've bled my own blood, while modeling!!! At least it wasn't a slice, I'd have awakened upside down on the floor wondering what the heck happened.

Had to do it Frank!!!!!!

Isn't that Stans' father from South Park?  Sorry about the blood.  It would have been nice to have a FSM band aid (sticker) to apply to the wound.  Could someone come up with a small red heart logo, with an exacto stuck through it , so that everyone that has bled their own blood from a modeling accident could display it in their signature line?  Rick.

Oy!  I've got serious competition!   Lookin's mighty fine in those Speedos, pal- and you're 410 will certainly be done before mine and likely put it to shame!  I'll hopefully vac the canopy this weekend- how does your kit version look?

Cheers!

Purple, of course!Big Smile

You also have to watch the very thin leftover frets on the photoetched metal sprue; I lightly nicked a finger yesterday. No blood but I did notice when I did it.

Hope that won't interfere with your guitar playing, fermis!

Thanks 38Toast

The spilled blood badge aint a bad idea, but I think everyone would have one, or at least be in line for WHEN it happens!!!  Just like drivers, there are those who have had a flat tire, and the rest just haven't had one YET!!!

Pics will be coming in a while...pit's almost done!!!

Got the main parts of the pit finished. The rest will be done prior to the canopy.

Started with kit parts and colored PE. Scratched a new "stick" from stretched sprue and a few other tiny bits and pieces.

001-4.jpg picture by fermisb

I also added some wiring to the instrument panel.

002-3.jpg

It got RLM 66 (MM enamel) followed by some drybrushing and a Raw Umber wash.

003-2.jpg

The seat pad is folded up and wrinkled masking tape.

004-1.jpg

All the instruments got a dab of clear glue to represent glass.

Here's the gunners pit. Just added a couple wires and aluminum foot rests.

Should have her closed up this evening!!!!

Dang this thing's looking like a beauty!

I'm tempted to do a WIP thread for my Dauntless, but totally intimidated by how great this and others look even at the early stages!
