XP-47J, Thunderbolt/ Superbolt, now.. a WIP
Posted by p38jl on Friday, October 1, 2010 10:54 AM

Hello, I just snagged on ebay a conversion kit to make the XP-47J Superbolt.

Looks to be a pretty sweet build, vacuformed airframe, resin prop, fan, intake. and clear canopy extension.. You use the Monogram P-47D wings and other parts to finish it..

It DID not come with decals,, I am going to try to make my own for the nose art.

Can anyone find a good color shot of the Superbolt Nose art ? I havn't had much luck ....Sad

Thanks!Smile

I was able to get a good copy of the logo from a 1/72 scale manufacturer..

I am trying to finish this kit/conversion by Sat night, 10/16/10

I have started trying to take some WIP pics and not get into the "groove" I get into and forget to take WIP Pics..lol

What nose art? The "Superman" one on the NMF bird?

Or are you actually wanting the XP-72 Superbolt?

Maybe something like these "Allies '46" P-72s?:

That's the nose art, I am doing the XP-47J , I can't find a nice side on view to look at and copy from. I did find a few black n whites, but there not close enough to get the details. I didn't know if anyone had any bet pics than that one.

I'll see what I can dig up... There was only one "J" model ever built so....

The Superman logo appears to be a painting of the 1940's-era Superman holding a lightning bolt... That's all I could find in my stuff anyway...  Here's a shot of him, note the chest insignia..

Get an artist friend that could do it up for ya and then you could shrink it down to size and print it on decal paper, perhaps?

those other ones are the " H" models... Sweet looking birds to..

the"J" had the shorter nose and the big fan inside the cowl..

The nose art looks like Superman holding s Lightning rod, or a "bolt" of lightning... but the pics I've found so far arn't very good, or you can't see the art well enough..

The kit instructions came with black n white art,, but again,, not very detailed, my officer printer is one with the solid 4 color inks, I'm kinda anxios to try this for decal printing.. and thought this might be a good one to try...

Thanks for looking Hans...!

Ps.. I was sneeking on ther net at work... googling....Surprise

:550:0]here is the work done on the wing, your supposed to fill in 2 holes, and make one extra, as the XP-47J had 3 guns in each wing, not 4.. [View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Is this the variant that had the big Chrysler engine in it?  Just curious, I lost all my reference material.

Interesting side profile on this, can't decide if I like it or not yet! The work on the cowling & area is looking good.

Looking good so far. I hadn't seen this version of the Thunderbolt. Very cool.

By the way, are you a volunteer firefighter? I'm a medic for a department here in Houston, Tx.

sorry for anyone following this, or lurking.. but Life stuff,, fire calls( we've been very busy) then Xmas have slowed any progress.

I also ran into a misshap appplying the black undercoat for the Alclad paint I'm going to try.. The black spattered like it was chunky, and even the 2nd coat which I strained did the same thing.. I used Alclad's black also..

Then, the black took days to dry...

The other day I dug it out and sanded it with 1000g,, its smoother now.. and progress is starting back up..

Stay tuned.. be patient.. !

thanks !Smile

Seems fitting, wasn't Superman's creator actually a transplanted Canadian? Frank Schuster, right?? (No relation to Wayne & Schuster though...)

I have built the XP-47H, yhe XP-72, and the XP-47J.  I have the P-47 In Action book that has pics in it of all these aircraft.  If I remember, the -47J had basic stars and bars and the cowling markings were black.

I don't much care about being politically correct.  That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
