Nightfighter Group Build for 2011
Posted by Gregbbear on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 7:28 PM

Hello, I have been kicking this idea around lately, and I think there is enough interest.  The feedback I have been getting is to start in early 2011.  How about New Years?

It is open for nightfighters and night attack aircraft, all eras.  I want to stay away from night bombers.  How I want to differentiate that is one is a hunter, and one goes and bombs a target.  So that makes it pretty broad.  Examples are, but not limited to:  NF Mosquitoes, Black Widows, NF Corsairs, B-26 Invaders, B-57G Canberras, NA Harrier, Po-2s, and a plethora of Luftwaffe subjects like Bf-110s, Ju-88s, and He-219 etc.   So basically, if it is a nocturnal predator, it is welcome.

The rules:

Night fighter or night attack- see above

Crossovers welcome

Started builds would be okay.

Works in progress please!

Please be social, help each other out, and share.

And of course, the Have Fun!

I haven't hosted a GB before, so please bear with me, and those of you with experience doing such, your help would be greatly appreciated.  I welcome feedback on this GB, and if you are interested please let me know.  The duration will be a year, so if you are too busy now, please feel free to drop in and join later.  Since it will start after the Holiday Season, don't forget to ask for a NF for Christmas or Haunuka etc!!!

Cheers,

Greg

As much as I'd like to join, at this time I have too many other commitments to follow through on. I will join in later if everything gets done with time to spare.

Closest I have in my stash is a F-117 "Nighthawk", not quite a real night fighter. Otherwise would be fun as have never been a dedicated night fighter.

I have some good candidates in the stash for a nightfighter group build.  I may take a while to get started but count me in.  Leaning toward a 72nd scale Revell He219 I have but I may very well change my mind on the kit to build by the time I get to it.

I picked up the ProModeler 110 G-4 at the Austin show for $10.  Gives me a chance to build it. 1/48 Bf-

Thanks Guys!  January will be the kick off then.

The F-117 sounds good.  It is a nocturnal hunter, so I think it fits the bill.

$10 for the 110-G4 Promodeler?  That is a great price.  I wish I would have drove up for that show, but I had my kids that weekend.  They start groaning whenever I even mention Model Fiesta.  Times change, when I was 10, I would have cleaned my room and kept it that way for a chance to go to a model show.   Anyways, heard the Austin show was good.

Cheers,

Greg

Just want to make sure I understand your intent. I first thought you were simply looking at night interceptors (air to air), but I'm looking at some of the aircraft you are saying are ok and they have primary ground attack missions. So when you said no night bombers I'm guessing you meant no level bombers, not fighters only.

So ground attack aircraft that use the dark to hide them while they actively seek ground targets (as opposed to just flying to point A and dropping bombs) are ok. Is that basically what you were going for?

I'm probably going for a nightfighter either way, but I do like the idea of including night interdiction aircraft like the B-26s that hunted trains during the Korean War or the aircraft that hunted trucks on the Ho Chi Mihn trail.

Greg ;

I'll do the four USMC 1/72 Night Fighters ;

TBM-3D Avenger

F6F-3N Hellcat

F4U-2 Corsair

PV-1 Venture

All four kits come with the Owl conversions sets for night fighters and a night fighter decal sheet , which I just can't remember the manufacture's name Confused

looking forward to the new year start .

Welcome aboard guys!  I am working on a couple of potential badges, and I will put them up for a vote when we get a little closer.

Aaron, you are right.  Night hunters is what I am looking for, not level bombers, such as lancasters bombing Berlin.  But the night fighters that were shooting them down, yes.  I also wanted to include aircraft like the B-26 Invaders in both Korea and Vietnam that were out hunting after dark.   Night hecklers like Po-2s and CR-42s fit in too I think.

From the list of potential builds and builders, I think this is going to be really interesting GB.  Thanks for that.

Cheers,

Greg

I probably won't get around to this until well into next year, but what the heck? Sign me up. Not sure about the airframe yet. Probably a Tamiya Mossie or Eduard 110.

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

On Deck:  1/350 HMS Dreadnought

Thanks for hosting this Greg,

I hate to go with the obvious but between Hans von Hammer talking about classic Monogram kits and Fermis's fantastic build I've built up a big hankering to do the good old Monogram 1/48th P-61 Black Widow.

So put me down one widow please!

Andrew

Just a bit of Trivia... The reason the Air Force designated the Nighthawk a fighter was that they wanted fighter pilots to volunteer for the program, but knew that NO real fighter pilot would step forward to fly a A-117...

As far as the GB goes, I might be up for it with either a Tamiya 1/48 Beaufighet Mk VI, He 219, or Monogram/ Academy 1/48 P-38M...

Well heck if doesn't start until January I s'pose I can throw my hat into the ring.  Most likely either a Revel-o-gram P-61 or a B-26K(Father-in-law was involved with flying these in Vietnam).  Is this up in the GB section of the forum yet?
