Painting Help for 1/72 dauntless by airfix
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 19, 2004 11:58 PM
I am building the 1/72 airfix dauntless kit. I am finishing it as an sbd-5, Captain Bell USMC VMSB-241 of 1944. It is painted in the navys tri color scheme. I dont understand something in the painting instructions though. They tell you (according to Humbrol paints) to paint the bottom of the plane 34(white), The middle portion of the fuselage 144(intermediate blue), the upper fuselage is painted 104(oxford blue). Now the part i dont understand, The upper wings and elevator portion of tail is said to be painted 104 + 135 (oxford blue + satin varnish). I thought in the tri-color scheme that the upper fuselage was supposed to be the same color as the wings. If it is supposed to be the way the kit suggests (maybe for weathering?) do i mix them or put one over the other. Any help appreciated. A picture of the scheme (not the plane of vmsb-241) http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Aircraft/Dauntless_Sbd6_preserved_smithsonian.gif

(i also noticed this varnish mixing thing in my airfix kit of the j2f-6 duck.)

Welcome to ther forum !
The upper surfaces were glossier than the lateral & ventral surfaces. It probably had something to do with camoflaging the AC from above, trying to blend it with the reflectivity of the water. You can paint it flat, and gloss or satin coat it after you do your final flat coat.
Hope this helps.

I encountered the same scheme with one of my Hellcats, Non-specular(flat) sea blue, intermediate blue, white and the leading edges of the wings in glossy sea blue. The gloss blue maybe the reason for the satin varnish. I have that Dauntless kit by Airfix and painted it just the tri-color scheme. I saw a picture of the same aircraft in an old issue of Air Classics and it doesn't show the gloss blue, so I didn't follow the instructions.

FWIW, just my 2 cents, but in the harsh Pacific sun, coral spray, and salt air, I believe the gloss faded to a flat finish pretty fast. I paint all the upper camo in flat but I'll sometime change it a little for fabric covered surfaces.
