Revell 1/48 B-1B

Without a doubt the biggest kit I've ever seen, and I'm about to tackle it. I've just placed my order with the local hobby shop, should be here next week. The question I have for you more experienced folk is this- What tips, pointers, advice, cross comments, warnings, etc have you got for a relatively inexperienced modeler to tackle this kit? I've got no doubt I can do it, but I want to do it the best I possibly can.

Thanks in advance!

I think i remember this kit, i seem to remember having alot of trouble with the tail cone.

This review might help too.

beefee,,,,  while I cannot offer any advice on the kit (not familiar with this one) I can suggest you also post in General Model Discussion.....    never hurts to cover as many bases as possible.

Your post caught my eye as one of my nephews is in Special Ops with B-1B's........  he's been associated with a number of  hot-zone sorties for the past 10 years.

The best of luck with your endeavor.........

Get me a squadron number, and I'll see if I can come by some markings for his =) I love building models with meaning - I've built several just because they were important to me, I've got an F-16 with the local Air Force Base's markings, a CV-22 (modified from the italieri V-22 kit) and the revell germany F-22A 1/72nd kit done in Elmendorf AFB markings because that's where my friend is stationed, and he works on the real ones. If it's possible, it would be my pleasure.

Here's one that my buddy built /forums/t/124870.aspx?PageIndex=1, he did a great job, and does point out some troubled areas AND how to fix them!

Also check out the Swing Wing GB thread. Several people did Bones there.

Unfortunately one of the resin companies that did some stuff for the Bones just closed up shop.

Its a bear of a kit and one can spend hours doing a lot of interior detailing which never (especially the rear cockpit) will be visible once the model is buttoned up. This kit begs for aftermarket and there are some PE as well as resin to assist but what it really needs is flaps and slats!

I've built a couple of these kits, one was for a store display at a LHS. It hung from the ceiling for years and was offered to me as it was headed towards the dumpster as they didn't want it anymore. It was missing a few pieces having been banged around during a couple store relocation moves. It is in the stash awaiting restoration.

Not to sound like a stick in the mud....but....I too have this kit.  At first it looks quite intimidating and I can't wait to tackle it myself.  So here's what I did.  I went out and purchased Revell's 1/72nd scale B-1B.  My reasons for this are simple.  I'm sure the build pattern's are similar just exploded a bit.  So I'm going to use that as my "practice" before going on to the bigger 1/48. Also, if you can, pick up the B1B detail in scale published by I believe Kalmbach.  Happy modeling and good luck.

I built this thing myself. I would say it is pretty typical Revell. The detail is nice, but the fit isn't perfect. It is something anyone of some ability can handle. I had some trouble with warped parts on the rear bomb bay and main wheel wells. So I simply built mine wheels up with just the forward bays open. Check the alignment on the rotary launcher parts. I had a small issue with mine and honestly it kinda bugs me.

If you want a current one get aftermarket decals. I think TwoBobs makes a few sheets. Also, I think skunkmodels makes a new generation sniper pod which is now being fielded.

Oh yeah, the tailpipes are wrong and corrections are virtually non-existent. F-15 tailpipes will not fit before you get the idea.

Excuse me.. Is that an Uzi?

The D&S book is pretty hard to find.

I recommend getting the  DACO Publications "Uncovering the B-1B".  Its a step beyond what the D&S books are.

Cutting Edge still has some decent B-1 decals:
