Tamiya 1/48 RAF Mustang III
Posted by Spike190 on Monday, April 30, 2012 8:07 AM

Hi everyone,

Just got this finished this morning. I'm in the middle of trying to complete something else and this was a very pleasant way of getting back into the swing of things.

Painted using Gunze Aqueous and a little Vallejo and citadel for the wheel well and detail painting. I know the cockpit floor is incorrect but I wanted a quick build without to much hassle, being an RAF mustang I fitted an Eduard British harness and also a vac formed Malcolm hood as I prefer to display cockpits open. I also used Techmod decals as I live in terror of decals these days and didn't fancy the kit ones, other than a few self made problems the Techmod performed splendidly. I kept the weathering to a minimum.

Here are some pictures,

Thanks for looking and all comments are welcome.

Japanese kit of an American a/c, in RAF service, with a Polish pilot!!! I love it! The white ID bands & yellow leading edges make for a nice bright machine too - -well done.

Sweet build! What Gunze colors did you use for the grays? I know they make a medium sea-gray but how about ocean gray?

The minimal approach to the weathering really works here. Very nice build!

Very nicely done! Have the same kit in my stash and I'm planning on doing the 112 squadron markings included in the kit (I HATE Tamiya decals but love sharkmouths...and the only AM decal sheet that covers the same aircraft is long OOP).

Thanks chaps for the nice comments, I really would recommend this kit to anyone in a bit of a 'slump', it builds up really quickly and I didn't use any filler.

Nathan I was stuck as what to use myself as I really wanted to stick with the Gunze paints, after some googling I found a thread on Britmodeler and the fella had suggested :

Dark Green : H73

Ocean Grey : H75 (RAF Dark Sea Grey) he seemed to think Gunze had perhaps named it incorrectly

Medium Sea Grey : H335

I know the green and the sea grey are good matches for the newer Tamiya colours but the Ocean grey is a little lighter, anyway I liked his stuff so followed his lead.

Cheers...

Have to agree. I built Tamiya's P-51B as my first kit back to the hobby. It's basically the exact same kit with different decals, but it's probably the tightest-fitting thing I've built to date, and that's including some really great kits including Tamiya's Jugs and big Spitfire. And it's just two friggin' sprues.

Yup DoogsATX I agree, will certainly do another sometime. I'd like Tamiya to do this version in 1/32 to go alongside the P-51D, I always prefer the versions with the high back, be it a P-47, P-51, Spitfire or Typhoon.

Very pretty...  There's something about a P-51 in RAF camouflage that I just love... (Although, there probably should have been a "hard" edge to the demarkation lines, since the colors were masked... Don't sweat it though, that's just a nit-pick and it looks outstanding as is..)

Just a little historical background on the markings: Mustang  Mk III, s/n FB387, of No. 315  Sqn (Polish), flown by Captain Eugeniuz Horbaczewski, a 16.5-kill Ace (including 11 previous kills in Spitfires, and four "Diver" (V-1) kills).

On 18 August 1944 while leading 315 Sqn, CPT Horbaczewski and 315 Sqn bounced 60+  Fw190s taking off and landing at Beauvais Airfield in occupied France during a "Rodeo" (Fighter Sweep).  The squadron knocked down 16 Fw 190s in 15 minutes, including three 190s falling to Horbaczewski's guns.  This raised his total Mustang tally to 5.5 kills... Unfortunely, he was shot down and KIA during the fight...

I'm reasonably certain that Tamiya will do a B/C version of their big 'Stang. They'd have to rejigger the fuselage to make it work, but the other major differences would be the cockpit floor and the guns - but the way the -D guns install on their kit, I have a feeling they've kept the option open.

Now what I will be interested in is what we see first - a 1/32 P-51B/C (we're about as far removed now as the Spit VIII was from the IX), or their next subject. Which I've read but haven't been able to substantiate is going to be the Corsair.

Very well done!  I agree with Doogs.  Aside from both 1/48 scale Jugs, the '51 B has to be one of the best kits out there.  Even better than their D version.  The B was probably the third plane I built when I started modeling again and once finished, I actually thought I was a good modeler (cue the wrong answer buzzer) .  I have the exact version as yours waiting and you may have insired me to do an RAF version as well.  So I'm curious, as I'm sure others are as well, how did the Techmod decals perform?  My last experience was disastrous.

At least Techmod have got the markings correct, something Tamiya and everyone else cannot mange.

It is obvious from photographs that the camouflage has a soft edge, not surprising as it was repainted after leaving the factory. The Temperate Land Scheme (Dark Earth/Dark Green) was factory applied to all Mustang I, IA, II, and III built for the British at Inglewood. The Day Fighter Scheme (Ocean Grey/Dark Green) was introduced at Dallas during the manufacture of Mk III aircraft in the HB range. The KH range as well as Mk IVs built later were finished in the DF scheme. Mustangs painted or repainted in the DF scheme in the USA were painted with ANA 613 Olive Drab and ANA Sea Gray. There was no equivalent for Ocean Grey, Sea Gray being a match for Extra Dark Sea Grey. This appears not have been satisfactory for the British, probably because there was insufficient contrast between the American colours. As a result aircraft were repainted yet again on arrival in Britain. It cannot be ascertained from photographs if only the Sea Gray areas were repainted or both the Sea Gray and Olive Drab.

FB387 was built as a P-51C, USAAF serial no. 42-103537. Factory finished in the TL scheme and repainted in the DF scheme in Britain.

On the wing root, under the letter P is a STEP HERE stencil with a downward pointing arrow. It has a dark background with may be the original Dark Earth of the TL scheme masked over during the repaint. After spending some time in storage after delivery, in the last days of July 1944 it was allocated to 315 Squadron at Brenzett, and then chosen by S/Lr Horbaczewski as a replacement for FB382. After he failed to return on 18th August, FB387 remained with 315 Squadron until late October 1944 when it was transferred to 316 Squadron. Its career ended on the night 9th November when F/Lt Walawski hit a lorry while taxiing at Andrews Field. It was sent away for repair, but re-categorised as beyond repair and SOC.

Hans and Antoni thanks for the background information, I'd read up a little but you gave a lot of extra detail, thanks again.

Lawdog, the Techmod decals worked just fine, I've struggled of late with decals and I was a little unsure about using them but they gave me no problems other than me mucking up one of the fin flashes, rather than try and patch the decal I just used the kit ones, had to double up on the red part as the Tamiya was a bit dodgy.

Cheers...
