Airfix/MPC 1/72 SBD Dauntless 'Pearl Harbor'
Posted by Chris FFZ on Thursday, January 31, 2013 6:50 PM

This is the old Airfix kit, the dive brakes were drilled out and aftermarket decals were used, making this aircraft part of scounting 6, USS Enterprise that arrived over Pearl during the attack and were shot at by both sides. This particular plane's rear gunner was credited with 2 downed enemy planes (the gunner was killed) but the pilot survived to sink a japanese sub 5 days later and scored the secong hit on the 'Kaga' at Midway.

Very clean SBD! Interesting story on the pilot and gunner too.  I bet you had fun drilling out those dive brakes!

Great story behind the aircraft. It's a very nice build.

Way to go!! Love Dauntlesses. My boy and I are working on one in a group build. Gotta get back on that thing. Like the homework you did on your bird. The story always helps to bring the result out just that much  more.

It's a venerable kit, I built the MPC 3-subject boxing, when I was a kid.  Congratulations on your results, and on your fortitude in drilling out the dive brakes.  It really helps dress the kit up.
