Has this ever happened to you?
Posted by benzdoc on Sunday, February 22, 2004 1:41 PM
So, I'm getting close to fininshing my P 47's cockpit. I've just got to put the seatbelts on the seat, and then I can put the sides on and it's done with the cockpit. I'm using the Eduard detail set, and the instructions have the lap belts transposed from what the Detail and Scale pics show. So, I decide to go with the reference, right? Well, a couple of hours later, I'm admiring my work, and Doh! I ended up doing it backwards!!

Has anything like that ever happened to you?

I was building the Verlinden Resin cockpit for the Trumpeter A-10, and I glued the belt buckles and the sticks in backwards.....I was pretty bummed out.....luckily, I caught it while they were still kind of wet.

I glued the horizontal stabilizers on a 1/48 P-51 mustang upside down once. [:0] I didn’t realize it until almost 3 years later Confused [%-)] ...when I promptly fixed them. Whistling [:-^]

Nah, I don't do nanything like that on something that is not as noticable. I just put the star decal upside down on an F9F and didn't notice it until after I clear coated it.Banged Head [banghead]

I glued the landing gear covers for a P-47D Razorback on backwards, reversed left on right. Had it on display at the LHS for several months and either no one noticed or was too polite to say anything. I didn't notice until I brought it home and put it on a shelf with other Jugs. Was easy to fix, fortunately.

On my first Me-109, I glued the landing gear backwards and was so frustrated, I cut them off, glued the gear doors in the up position, pulled off the prop blades and
WALA! ... a Me-109 in flight!

Regards, Dan

I've had countless boo-boos, but this is the one that bothers me most.

Only after sealing the decals with Future did I notice...

I put the cross on the left wing one panel line too far outboard ! Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

Since we're sharing stories of DOH!s here's a few of mine.

The decals on my Corsair are upside down on the underside of the wings. The numbers that go on the landing gear doors were put on backwards as well as the star insignia upside down. Only after letting everything dry a week later did I spot this. Thus I had my first guinea pig of model to test things on. It's on a shelf in the attic next to the P-40 cat attack victim and P-51 most mistake prone paint job plane I ever built.

Alas my latest DOH! I purchased Battle Axe's 1/48 scale Beechcraft 18 (JRB4 Expediter). That's my mistake. This thing is requiring more putty than any six planes I have put together. Nothing fits. Shoulda read the online reviews about this kit before I acquired it. Everything points to it being a challenge.

You guys might have read elsewhere that I managed to put a couple of hull plates onto the wrong side of my ship (scratch built in 1:48 scale, about 4' or so long). Took a couple of hours to scale the plates, cut them out, emboss over 300 rivets ...

D'OH!!!

Y'know, somedays you really should have stayed in bed.

You guys mention things that have gone wrong AFTER you have started/finished building the kit, well I went one better.

Imagine downtown scrubsville, rainging outside so modelling time right?

One PBY-5A Catalina, fresh from the box, 1/72 scale, and off too the sink to wash her up.

I have to use the laundry, missuss hates me washing models in the kitchen.

So there I am scrubing all the nasty chemicals and residue of this beautifully white styrene kit, when I reach for some more detergent, and find it to be replaced by a large bottle of degreaser.

This doesn't gel with me for a bit, like when the Catalina's left fueselage half turns too putty, then gel, then dissolves and runs down the drain.Angry [:(!]

There is a bright side thoughBig Smile [:D]

Now my missuss lets me use the sinkSmile [:)]Smile [:)]Smile [:)]

So it's true that misery loves company!! Big Smile [:D]

I wonder how many of these types of things are a result of beer? I know it contributed to mine, but only a little bit!!

Thanks for sharing guys

Nope... nothing

I have never... ever made a mistake on any of my models. Be it.... painting...sanding...weathering...decals...spilled paint...and so on.

I guess I'm perfect. <g>

My worst DOH!! involved the emergency room as well...

I glued the side plates to a 1/12 Ferrari on upside down, so the suspension arms would match the openings in the chassis...I wedged an Xacto blade into the laminate to work 'em free, and promptly cut off the tip of finger, about 1/2 inch. Ended up in the emergency room...not fun.

Fit twice, glue once? Or in Jeff's case, cut once, never again?
Yep, been there, done all of the above, and more.
To err, is human, trouble is, you can't really blame the plastic;
The decal designers, or whoever drew the instruction sheet however, those people you can blame!
