Anisoptera Mechanica
Posted by Swanny on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 4:17 PM

I spent the entirety of 2013 building subs and undersea life, now I feel the urge to start building the flying things once again. I thought it might be best to work my way back into it gently so am starting with this 1/35 Anisoptera Mechanica. Hey, it's all in the name.

Here we have the heart of the beast.

With it's four wing stubs, I suspect what this might look like.  Anxious to see it!

Looks and sounds cool! I'm assuming she's going to be some sort of ornithopter?

Yeah, it's definitely 'Steampunky' and a little hot rod as well.

Swanny, I almost bought one of those!!  Heck, I still may.  I've also had an eye on the fish-shaped submersible, wanting to display it beside my Nautilus, when it's finished, of course.  How well is this kit going together?  Thanks.

Mike has two different guys doing his casting, the guy who did the Dragonfly is excellent. The kit goes together without a single hiccup. The other guy did the Hornethopter and while still a good kit it has more issues with casting boogers and slight misalignment. I'm not sure which one did the fish - I don't have that kit yet however just contact Mike through his site and ask.

Steampunk was the first thing that popped into my head as well.  Not too shabby there.  Welcome back my friend from Frozen northern Ohio.

Very impressive, Mr. S! As I'm not a sci-fi guy, what is this kit based upon?

Wow!  Such an erudite title!  "Anisoptera".  Now THERE'S a word you don't see everyday!  Cool

This should be good!

Wow, that is looking good, Swanny! Looks almost like an old front-engined dragster from back in the late '50s - early '60s. Is this based on a book or movie character? I know you've said earlier that it's "Steam Punk" themed, but if there is a book or movie with this in it, I'd be interested in reading/watching it.

I don't think it is based on anything more than the wanderings of Michael Fichtenmayer's devious mind. When I saw it under development I thought it looked too cool to miss getting one.

Ever pull wings off a fly?

Here is one of four wings. The image does not do it justice. I dusted the clear panel with a translucent pearl lacquer that is intended for use by taxidermists working on fish. In person the light kind of shimmers across the wing yet you can still see through it. I still have to add rigging to the wing.

The first wing goes on.

A closer look at the control cables.
