Paint's on! I started by paint the external fuel tanks AMC Gray. When I compared AMC Gray to the Testors Gray Primer it was the EXACT same color. I am 99.9% certain now that AMC Gray is too dark. So once that dried, I sanded the tanks with 2000 grit and reshot the tanks Model Master Neutral Gray FS36270. That is spot on to the color I remember these Herks being painted. Here's the overall aircraft in Neutral Gray.

Steve, incredible work, sir! I'm very impressed with your modeling prowess, including the F-35 that you're working on in another thread. You seem to be a wealth of knowledge on the Herky Bird, which is good to know! Seeing this post brings back some good memories of when my dad was in the Tennessee ANG in Memphis back in the mid-70s. He was a crew chief on one of the C-130s stationed there (I don't remember which version). He used to take me with him on some of his Guard weekends, and I would climb around in the cockpit while he did his pre-flight checks. I guess I was around 10 years old then. Hog-heaven to a kid like me! He was a crew chief on F-100Ds & Fs back in the late-50s - early-60s when he was in the regular USAF.

Panel lines...after a 4000 grit go over...you can kind of make them out in these pics. It breaks up the overall expanse of gray. I kinda like it.

What do you guys think about these bases? My old Air Force Flight Chief is a master woodworker and I tossed an idea to him for USAF Command Shield bases. Here are a couple of prototypes: Purple Heart Wavy Maple

Those are great-looking bases. You thinking of marketing them on the side? I would definitely consider buying one.

@Devil Dog

Yes actually, I was thinking about it.

Some specifics: The square hole is cut with a 7/16 miter drill bit at a 20 degree angle. The bases are approximately 8" in length.

Hello!

The Herk is looking good! I wanted to ask you about the decals - what do you use? The set looks very comprehensive. Good luck with your project, have a nice day

The stencil set is the Warbird Decals C-130 Common Data Set - USAF and USMC. The specific unit markings, which there are none for the 40th AS, but needed the right Stars and Bars is from the Authentic Decals C-130 set.

Nice model! I've always liked the C-130.

Custom Decal work. I have the best luck using the VitaCal system for making custom decals. The decals were created by downloading the shield and patch from the Dyess AFB website. \ The nose art "Damien" was provided by the 317th AG Historian. My brother, of Air Wing Graphics fame, subdues the color artwork. I cleaned up the nose art in GIMP. All were resized to their correct sizes and printed on decal paper and sealed.

Getting there...I don't recall Herks having so much data on them...I guess I was so complacent working around them that I didn't notice

Nice job on your Herk, I spent some of my enlisted days at Ft. Bragg across the fence from Pope. Loved seeing the Herks flying around and the airborne drops.

Stars and Bars, USAFs, Tail numbers, Flags, ACC shield and a little bit of rework! All that's left is the blue stripe at the top of the tail, giving a nice coat of flat and some windows! Enjoy...

Hey Steve, great build. Brings back memories since I was at Dyess from 82 to 86. Most of the heels then were still in southeast asia scheme . Just purchased the same kit and hoping to reflect that scheme on mine. Just back into modeling , have completed a few out of the box kits. Hoping mine turns out half as good as yours! Nice job

Excellent work. I have been looking to put together an H model with accurate comm/nav avionics like what I worked on in Elmendorf. Now I know where to get proper SKE radomes. Now I've gotta get back to working on the nav's bench.

FYI...Wolfpack is releasing an H update set this month. It's a must have to correcting the Italeri kit.

Your story at the beginning reminded me of my Dad working on the "deuces" parked at wright-pat. Thanks, I'll have to dig up the picture. Nice "herky bird". Bob
