Have Glass paint scheme
Posted by B_one fixer on Thursday, June 5, 2014 6:33 PM

So looking thru my stash I noticed I had a few 1/48 F-16C's from revell and Fujimi. I took the worst of the bunch to try my hand at the Have Glass paint used on some F-16's, all F-22's and F-35's. I tried everything from mixing tamiya silver with Future and airbrushing and painting by brush. The results were less than spectacular. I tried mixing  metallics into the gray and applied with an airbrush. This gave me a metallic gunmetal color. I resorted to dry brushing silver onto the kit. Dry brushing gave me the best results.

So posted below is my first attempt on an old 1986 dated revel kit in 1/48 scale. this was one of those Chuck Yeager series kits. The fit on the kit was terrible. Since this was purely for practicing the Have Glass look, I did not bother to seal up any seams. I will save that work for the fujimi kit.

Overall I don't think it came out too bad. In certain spots I went too heavy with the silver, but hey thats why this is a practice kit. If anybody has any pointers on achieving a good have glass look your feedback is appreciated. Thanks all.

What is "Have Glass?"  I have not heard that term before.

It's a low observable coating the Air Force uses on the F-22 and F-35 and some F-16's. It's that silver sheen you see on the F-22's in some pictures.

I think it's more commonly referred to as "Raptor Sheen".

This is the first I'm hearing of this term as well.  I might suggest though that you try Alclad's Light Sheen along with some of these other methods.  If you're applying it over a coat of Future or what have you then you'll have sealed all your paint and weathering so you won't have to worry about the Alclad eating any of it.  Perhaps give that a shot.  =]

Nice looking F-16!!

That is a tricky finish to pull off.  I recently only came across the term "Have Glass" in the April issue of Air International whose feature is on the F-22 Raptor.  It is more than the previous Raptor "sheen" and looks like it is painted silver, almost unfinished sitting alongside a pair of F-15 Eagles.

I think I am closer in the ball park now. I stripped the demo f-16 and resprayed with a new mixture I came up with. I think it looks alot better. I plan on using this on a couple of 16's and a 22 I have in the stash. But for now I ma just trying to come up with a good formula.
