Some neat Flying Tiger News...
Posted by Raymond G on Monday, June 23, 2014 10:17 PM

I just found out that the small college town of Commerce, TX will be honoring the Flying Tigers and Clair Chennault specifically.  The Texas A&M-Commerce (formally East Texas State University and also my Alma Mater) East Texas War and Memory Project, along with the City of Commerce will name the HWY-24 "The Flying Tiger Memorial Highway" in honor of it's native son: General Chennault himself.  He was born in Commerce just a stone's though away from the University.  Also, they will place the first plaque written in Chinese at his birth house on Monroe St., and will include Chinese dignitaries at the service.

Wow, my little corner of the world has put out some heros...  Audie Murphy was born in Farmersville, about 15 miles from here, Nimitz was born in Denton about 50 miles from here, Chennault about 19 miles from here, and Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn went to the University....  We must be feeding our boys something good.

Sorry guys, just had to express a little pride....  Raymond

LOL Ray. We have to barrow "heroes" here. Ernie Davis, being local, is an exception. Bob

I here you...  I think my O.P. was poorly worded.  I should've put "famous heroes.'  Every man and woman who has ever donned a uniform is a hero in my book....

Well, we got Colonel Don Blakeslee, leader of the 4th FG, born in Fairport Harbor Ohio, which is about 30 miles up Rt.2.  The late Benjamin Orr, bassist of The Cars (greatest band ever) is from my hometown of Parma, Ohio.  Ohhhh..... we're taliking "war heroes", not "idols".  Sorry about the tangent folks.

Raymond

I visited Tex A&M while visiting with friends at College Station and discovered an incredible Military and Arms Museum on campus. Some really interesting displays about Aggies that served in the military.

It's great to see these guys honored - they really stuck their necks out at a very dark time. Serving with the military is hero enough but traveling overseas intothe  totally chaotic conditions of Japanese occupied China really took some serious guts.
