Academy 1/48 Spitfire MK.XIVc D-Day/Operation Overlord Invasion stripes
Posted by Grant Dalzell on Saturday, July 5, 2014 1:16 AM

Just finished off this Spitfire for a group build, 70 years anniversary of operation overlord. Was a nice kit to work with, although I did not use the kit decals as Academy decals are usually horrible to set. I had some Italeri ones in my spares and used them. I used Tamiya, Vallejo & Italeri paints, Lifecolor exhaust stain paint and Vallejo matte polyurethane for final coat.

Beautiful build! I used the kit decals on mine many years back. Not horrid, but yours are a noticeable improvement...very well done sir!

Outstanding job, Grant!! Love the paint job you put on her. Painting the invasion stripes was the prudent thing to do. Much easier than trying to get the decals to line up correctly. I didn't realize that the Mk. XIVc was used during the D-Day invasion. I'm always learning something new on this website!

Nice Spit Grant..... I paint my stripes too. They're much more convincing.

They were around but not sure if the actually took part in D-Day.

91 Squadron and 322 Squadron were assigned to 2nd TAF but their role was to intercept any Luftwaffe reconnaissance aircraft trying to monitor the invasion buildup. No contacts were made and both squadrons were allowed to take part in occasional sweeps over northern France. After D-Day beachhead patrols were carried out until the 18th June when they were reassigned to ADGB for anti-Diver (V1) patrols.

BS513/PK*Z was a Spitfire Mk IX of 315 Squadron summer 1943. By D-Day 316 Squadron were equipped with the Mustang Mk III.

Grant - Just a super job you made of it, always really enjoy seeing your models, thanks so much. Would you please tell me about the Vallejo matte medium final coat, which looks great. Did you thin it, about how much and what thinner? I have it, but haven't used it yet. Thanks in advance.

Hello Patrick, I use the Vallejo matte polyurethane neat, no thinning, just keep an eye on your needle tip as you may get some build up after awhile.

Cheers
