F-104 Question
Posted by plasticjunkie on Sunday, August 17, 2014 10:50 AM

I was given a Hasegawa Kit  # 00446 F-104J/CF-104 and wanted to dress it up in US markings as a C model. Besides having different engines and internals for the Japanese and Canadian versions, the exterior should look the same?

The F-104J has a larger vertical stabilizer than the C model does, as well as larger / stronger landing gear which added bulges to the gear bay doors.  There might be some other detail differences I would have to look up if you need.

Thanks Bronto. I'm looking over the Hasegawa kit and the gear doors are smooth. The vertical stab  looks to be normal and not oversized. I'm thinking this is like a generic 104 with Japanese and Canadian decals added in the box by Hasegawa?

No, the Japanese and Canadian '104s had the enlarged rudder. The USAF A and C models (and those sent to Taiwan and Jordan, I think) were the only ones to have the short-chord rudder. Here's a side-on shot of my 1/72 Revell/Monogram F-104C kit done up in Albatross and Microscale decals (neither sheet had all the right markings, so I had to use both):
