Old 1/48 Monogram F-14A (Completed)
Posted by plasticjunkie on Saturday, February 7, 2015 8:03 AM

Just finished this old Monogram Tomcat as a commission. It's built mostly OOB except for using Academy's cans and Master Model alfa  and angle of attack probes. Decals are from Furball. Paints are MM enamels and cans are MM Metalizers. Pictures to follow.

Wow!   That's a great looking Tomcat Ernie.   Someone is going to really love receiving that bird!  It just goes to show that there's life in that old kit yet.  Well done indeed.Bow Down

Great hearing from you Gary and hope all is well in Texas with all this wicked weather going on. Thanks for your nice words. I really like building these old Monograms that can be a small challenge at times.

Nice looking Tomcat.

I'm always gratified when a model builder gets the afterburner cans correct on a F-14A.  It is a simple detail that is often missed.

Thanks for sharing your work.

Brandon and cnq

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes these old Monogram models are addicting indeed.

B1

No rescribing. I preshaded all the lines. After the top coat went on I then used my turp and artist oil brew on the recessed details. I also used a dark Prismacolor pencil to lightly darken the raised details.  MMP Powders were used for the staining then sealed everything with a light mist of Alclad clear flat cut 50/50 with thinner.

Nice VF-84 Bird.   Your client will be pleased.  Aside from the A-10, the F-14 is probably the only "modern" jet I would ever build...Thanks for sharing...

Looks nice! I have cobbled together all the parts of that kit (except the nose gear landing light) from two I didn't totally ruin years ago. Hope to eventually build full series of Grumman fighters in 1/48.

Does anybody know offhand when F-14s switched from the early style to late style alfa probe?

Jeaton

Thanks!

GS48

Looks like from what I gather that the Alpha Probe went to use  around Block 95 which looks like 1975 or 76. All the Cats that went to Iran in 1976 were brand new ones from block 95 and had the Alpha probe. All A's eventually got retrofitted with it.

Thanks  Trey. It has its challenges but it builds into a decent Tomcat.

I remember the old Monogram kits from when I was a teenager. If something was wrong it was easily fixed and in the 1/48 scale and larger there was always enough detail.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Holy crap! Nice lookin' build! I tried to build one of these many moons ago. Couldn't get the wings right. Maybe I'll have to try it again.
