Tamiya Decals and Burns?
Posted by SubarooMike on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 3:34 PM

Hello  everyone!     I have built my share of Tamiya kits thus far and I always replace the decals with after-market.  The reason being I always prefer of different scheme; however, this time is different.

I am currently building Tams BF-109 and I want to paint it as Joachim Müncheberg's bird. This involves me using Tams thick decals.   I tried using one of my Tam F4F decals and my Mr.Mark Softer on an old Academy Spit fus.     The Mr.mark just kind of pooled on the surfaces and did not affect it too much.  Where it bubbled, it did leave little "burn" marks -- like water spots.    What is the secret to using Mr. Mark (I have always used Micro Sol, but I decided to make a switch to something a bit more stronger) and or Tam decals?

I have successfully used Solvaset to handle Tamiya decals....regarding the 'burning'-are you putting down a gloss acrylic coat prior to decaling?  I use Future (or whatever it is being called these days) clear acrylic have had the same issue-an over spray of Future takes care of it.

The burns are slight and are on the Tam decals only.  The tech mods softned up nicely, but did not burn. But I did melt a Tech Mod as an experiment to see what would happen if I left the pools of Mr.Mark S on them lol   But I got rid of Future a while back. It did not hold a candle to good old Testors Glosscote.  Drys quicker and sprays smoother!   But this is not a problem of gloss but decals.   But I still use Future if I want an acrylic gloss or flat coat (with the X21)

I have done that kit with the supplied decals, some micro slo worked them well. i AM BUSY WITH tAMIYA 1/48 f-51D , this kit has the thickest decals I have used to date but again the microl sol (2 applications) sorted them out without any damage.

Agreed......nothing like good old Testors Gloss and Dull, if you can stand the fumes.  Try only using the scheme specific decals for the bird your bulding then source the insignias and such from Aeromaster or the like.  Thats what I usually do.  I've always used Micro Sol without issue...
