Another 1/48 B-17G
Posted by B_one fixer on Monday, April 13, 2015 2:31 PM

Just finished this bird up in an effort to clear my started model projects from a few months back. after detailing up the interior then joining the fuselage halves together realizing that almost none of it will be seen I ended up shelving it due to loss of motivation. So she sat there for almost a year untill I decided to clear my backlog of started models.

Here is the monogram B-17G done up in Chow hound straight from the box.

Very nice! Love the B17s! I have this kit to build but got the Lil Miss Mischiel decals for mine. Thanks for the heads-up on the interior detail...was thinking that not much would be seen once it was closed up.

Great looking Chowhound. Mine is still in pieces.  I should clear up my back log too

I read once that a piece of flak wet through the dog, so they patch him up and painted a purple heart on him.

Thanks tony and greentracker. Yes it is true they did paint a purple heart due to flak damage on the dog. Its a good read.

Nice job!  I built the kit from Revell/Germany- and did the full interior, including the toilet in the back.  But most of it can't be seen now, and I have decided not to waste time on interior details like that again.

But I did it, since I had taken a ride in the Liberty Belle a few years ago, and remembered all the details so vividly.

The venerable old Monogram kit can be a pain to deal with in places, but your bird looks great - nice work!

What a beautiful B-17!  I love that old Monogram kit.  I finished one up a couple of years ago for my daughter and now I have the visible B-17 in my stash.  The kit is a real gem and makes for a fun build.

What color did you use on yours?  In the first picture, it almost looks brownish but in the other pictures, the color appears much darker.  I know lighting plays funny tricks on photography.

Thanks!

Thanks all.

Echo i used model master olive drab. I think the flash made the first pic look more like a khaki drab.

Really nice work.  Building the same kit myself ATM.  Did you contemplate the wire antenna from the tail fin to the fuselage ?  I'm thinking about it, just unsure of the anchor point on the fuselage.

Awesome!...I had the same sentiments about the interior.  All that for nothing....ugh!  I think on my next one I'll detail the nose and thats about it..  I think your drab looks great as does the staining.  Congrats on a fine build......

Thanks all, there is an aerial antenna line. I used 12/0 fly tying line/ Its pretty much invisible on the camera.

Any problems with the decals ?  Mine are badly silvered.  Don't have any  poly set so am using polyscale decal softener.  Stars and bars are fine.  Wishing now I had used the "General Ike" set I have in the stash.

THAT'S IT !

I have the same kit in my stash and after a year of poking around the interweb, the Chow Hound is the version i want to build, thanks to your posted inspiration.  I only hope mine comes out near as good as yours  .  Are there the Chow Hound decals available  AM, and if so, where can I get them ?

I also TY guys for the heads up on  scratch bulding the interior. i'll do some, but not as extensive as I previously planned to do .

Wirraway I ended up dipping the decals in future instead of using microsol. This actually worked well. There is zero silvering.

Jay jay I am not sure if there are chowhound decals in 1/48  in the am world. The only.ones I have seen were from.aero master and they were 72 scale.

I did the same thing with the interior on a 1/72 build. I decided that its such a beautiful airplane it deserved to be modeled with the interior visible. So I bought a 1/48 and some after market sets. I think I'm going model it with sections cut out. I'll let you guys know how it turns out! Hopefully half as good as this one!
