JU88A-6 Cable cutter 1/48 Dragon
Posted by TREYZX10R on Friday, April 17, 2015 8:45 PM

The kit is the usual Dragon offering. To make it more accurate I had to modify the engine cowls to eliminate the bulge on the bottom as well as changing the radiator inlets. Also the supplied props are incorrect for this version and needed to be changed out. I could only find one good photo for a refernce and it was void of codes so I left them off, maybe I'll add some at a later date if I can verify what they should be. For now it makes an unusual addition to the shelf. Hope you all enjoy and please feel free to critique/comment. Cheers Trey

That is very unique. I've not heard of it before , and yes, that would be quite the attention grabber on the shelf.

Very, very well done. Too bad about the tail codes. Maybe it was an only child and never had any?

Thanks Mike, from what I've been able to find they did build a few, most were later refitted with radar and the cable fender given the ole heave ho. Hasagawa has a 1/72 scale one out with codes but I've not been able to verify the authenticity of those . Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment, much appreciated.

Absolutely stunning!! The cutter apparatus (whatever it's called) looks like it's welded on! Those leather colored areas around the guns, are those boots? They look amazing! Jeez, the canopy work alone is incredible! I also love how it's not too clean and not too dirty. It's really quite exquisite

Great looking build TREY. I am after getting that 72nd Hase kit, I've already got the He 111 with those cutters. From what I can gather, when the Germans switched to night bombing over England, they seemed to have painted over most of the markings, it is possibly that your build is correct without the codes. It does look like the individual aircraft letter has been painted over and if that's not there, it would follow that the rest isn't there.

Great looking build. The JU88 is one of my all time favorite aircraft.

VERY VERY nice build .  Your subtle splinter camo is top notch and the glass work is simply amazing.  TY for posting this wonderful inspiration to us all.

I humbly bow to the great modeling skill here!  Is there any history on the crews that flew these aircraft.  It seems that the potential for having a bad day would be very high.   Thanks for posting.          knox

Jetmaker thank you for the kind words . Yes the boots around the guns are material ,I'm not really sure if its canvas or leather .

Lawdaog sorry to hear of your loss ,hope the cat burial went well. Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on another Ju88!

Bish thank you, brings hope to me to hear that about the markings! Really would like to see that 111 with the cutter built. Somewhere in my search I stumbled across a real nice pic of a downed 111 sporting the cable cutter, very unique set up for sure!

AT6 ,Jay Jay thank you both !

Knox thank you ! I'm not sure where to even start looking for that info but it would indeed be quite fascinating to read ,please post up anything you find as I was unable to turn up anything at all!

thanks for all then great response  everybody cheers Trey

I'll get round to it some day. I just did a search and found a couple of pics of a crashed 111H-8, one head on and one side on. Not sure if they are both of the same aircraft. But the side on image revealed no call signs on the side, and as you can see, most of the swastika was also painted out.

As for the Ju 88 version, I searched through my books yesterday, and there is very little info on the aircraft. I know neither type were around for very long, they came up with a new system for cutting cables, and as you rightly point out, the large cutters were removed.. The only thing I did find was that an 88A-6 with the cutters crashed in July 1941 in England, so they were still around then.

Bish that was the same pic I had found ,intresting that they painted out the codes and most of the swastika, thats why I left mine as is. The cutter in that pic really shows what a huge cumbersome set up it was, must have been a real pig to fly!

Ye, it must have been a real swine to fly that thing. Apparently it slowed the aircrafy down by about 20mph. One thing I am not sure about is if they carried a bomb load at the same time.

Another Splendid Dragon 88 from Trey! Awesome work and neat subject. Great job lining up the cable cutting supports. Are those pe parts from the kit? Very nice paintwork and splinter pattern too.

Bish I do'nt believe they carried a bomb load ,just went in ahead of the bombers. They would have been way too slow imho loaded up to keep ahead of the group .

Nathan thanks ,yes the pe cable cutters came with the kit. The pe fret had a good amount of other goodies too, interior parts gun site rings ect,.

Thanks Wing Nut!

Very cool build and well-executed!

I'd never heard of these before.

I did find this pic - not sure if it helps.
