Finished - 1:48 Tamiya P-51B Mustang
Posted by BrandonD on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 1:44 AM

I built this one for the Mustang group build. It's the 1:48 Tamiya P-51B Mustang in Don Gentile's Shangri-La markings. I really, really enjoyed this build. I had fun painting the stripes, and I tried out some new techniques (masking part of the canopy glass while it was already installed, toning down the brightness of the stripes with a mist coat of buff, and using a prismacolor paint pen to add some chipping around the gun bays).

The kit is mostly stock. The only AM piece is the harness, which is an Eduard PE piece. I think it was sorely needed and completes the cockpit.

Thanks for looking, all!

Stunning Brandon.  What OD did you use?  It looks dead on.  I'm about to embark on Kid Hofer's Salem Representative for the same Group Build (assuming I don't decide to squeek out yet another Messerschmitt)........

That looks great, one of my favorite kits.Yes

I love the look of  your OD.  When I did Kid Hofer's bird my OD came out too dark.

Thanks, everyone!

Buckeye, Joe - the OD is Tamiya acrylic in the bottle (I think it's XF-62, but I'm at work and can't see. Anyway, I'm sure you know the one I mean).

To get the shade lighter, I first sprayed black, then sprayed a base coat, then sprayed a coat that was 50 percent OD and 50 percent white on the insides of the panels. Then I finished it with a coat that was 70 percent thinner and 30 percent OD. That keeps it from being too dark and gives it a little definition in the panel lines.

Buckeye - that is a nice job on that. I love the two-tone finish.

BD,

That looks stellar.  Great build, subtle weathering and great photos as well.  Love the look that you achieved with the OD, thanks for describing the method that got you there, might have to try that on a future P-47 / 40 that I have in the stash.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice work! The satin finish really lends a depth and richness to the finish and gives the model life.
