AM P-51 Build
Posted by lzdaily@comcast.net on Saturday, May 2, 2015 5:24 PM

All, I'm currently working on the second build of my Mustang project, an Accurate Miniatures P-51. Here are a couple photos of my progress so far. I've got a build log (of sorts) going at http://home.comcast.net/~lzdaily/P-51.html

Your A-36 turned out great, am looking forward to seeing this one done! Have you picked markings yet?

Thanks for the kind words, all. I've decided to stick with the kit decals for this one, mostly because I haven't found any aftermarket decals for this kit. So, it will be marked as "Mah Sweet Eva Lea."

I had a few minutes today, so I took my P-51 to the spray booth for a coat of Olive Drab over Neutral Gray. Then I added the yellow theater stripes (because everything goes faster with stripes, right?).

I really like the attention to detail, it's impressive.

Thanks to one and all for the kind words about my P-51. Most appreciated. I teach at a university and our graduation ceremony was today so I'm not under contract again until August. I should be able to finish this build up pretty quickly now (it took me 4 months to finish my A-36).

Bish, you asked about my wing lights; I've got a build log going at home.comcast.net/.../P-51.html

Best to all,

Larry

AM made some of the best decals, didn't they? They always lie down flat and don't silver a bit! Did you use decal stripes or paint those?

GreenStyrene48, the AM decals are pretty good. I sometimes have to hit them pretty hard with Microsol or Solvaset to get them to conform to the model (the flag decal over the gap between the vertical stabilizer and the rudder, for instance), but generally they're pretty good. I painted the stripes. I started that with my A-36 - I didn't think the decal would work so well over the dive brakes.

Here's the latest update on my P-51. I've started weather using a burnt umber oil paint wash followed by an over spray of Model Masters 1941 Afrika Khakibraun.

Thanks, all. I've made a little more progress today. All that's left are the exhausts, a little detail painting, the pitot tube, the canopy, and the antenna (in roughly that order).

The grass is a grass mat by the German model railroad company Busch. I got it from Walthers.
