1/72 Eduard F6F-3 Hellcat Completed
Posted by JOE RIX on Friday, May 29, 2015 7:41 AM

Greetings Everyone!

Well, It has been over a year since I last posted a completed build and I'm happy to finally share another one. I just finished this Hellcat for the Pacific Carrier Aviation & 1944 GB's. This is the Eduard 1/72 F6F-3 Hellcat Profipack and let me tell you, it is one beauty of a kit. I used Techmod decals to depict "Little Joe" of VF-51 on board CVL-30 USS San Jacinto.

I used Model Master enamels paints overall. The panel wash is Flory Wash and the exhaust and gun/gun chute staining was achieved with pastels and pigments. A prismacolor silver pencil was used for chipping. Am parts used were an Ultracast seat w/ harness and Master metal gun barrels. I added copper wire for the brake lines on the landing gear. Weathering was done with lightened shades of dark sea blue then an overall dusting of Tamiya light gray highly thinned with 91% iso-alcohol.

I was set back on this build when not once, but twice, my Mr. Cear Coat Gloss orange peeled on me on the wings. The first time I completely stripped the paint  and repainted. When the same thing occurred the second time I'd run out of gumption to strip again. Plus, I now needed new insignia decals. Thus, I ordered an Eduard F6F-3 Weekend Edition kit for replacement parts. One of the beauties of the engineering on this kit is that the wings slide very snugly into slots in the fuselage. So snugly that initially I had not even glued the wings on. So, I was able to pop the original wings off and replace them new ones from the WE kit. The problem with the orange peeling seemed to stem from applying it over the gloss MM paint. I remedied the problem by applying a light flat coat first followed by the gloss coat. Go figure.

The moral of the story is that I simply refused to give up despite the insanely frustrating set backs. I was not about to toss it or put it up for a shelf queen. It just took some time, perseverance and patience. And it paid off for me. Rather happy with the finished product. So, when you face similar circumstances don't give up. Just step away for a bit and simply give some thought to a solution. Many of which can be found right here amongst you awesome folks.

If you have not had the opportunity to build one of Eduard's Hellcats, whether it be in 1/72 or 1/48, then I highly recommend that you do. They are marvelously detailed and engineered.

Enough said. Time for some pics:

Now for an added touch:

Thank You all for having a look. I wlecome all comments whether they be pro or con.

ENJOY!!

Oh My !

I have an Acurate Miniatures 1/48 F-6 in the stash that came with a load of PE goodies.  I'm waiting to build it because I want to boost my limited skilIs on 3 color camo and PE first .  I would be satisfied if mine comes out even half as good as your Edward version.   Well Done Joe.

The carrier deck in the pics looks very cool.  Where did you get that if I may ask ?

TY for the heads up on the orange peel issue . I'll be sure not to do that.

Question;   I have started painting the interior etc.  I noticed that your wheel wells are grey ?  Did I screw up already by painting mine zinc chromate primer ?

Thank You very much Mississippi, Jay Jay and Mike. That is indeed very kind of you all.

Jay Jay- The carrier deck is a nice cardboard one that I got from Squadron Shop during one of their occasional sales. Initially, my plan was to cut a piece of it out and mount it on a base for the Hellcat. But after using for these pics I may just save it for that reason. I also need to hit it with a coat of flat coat as it is too glossy.

Concerning USN aircraft wheel wells, yes, it is was common to paint the wells the same as the underside color. Very common to paint them white in the tricolor scheme. Now, with that said, I find that there is always an exception to the rule. I have seen reference pics of USN aircraft in the tri color scheme with the wells left unpainted and thus, chromate yellow. The zinc chromate green was usually just used in the cockpit. So, I advise that you closely check any reference photos you can of the particular aircraft you are building.

Very nicely done, particularly the exhaust staining!

Thanks Groot. The exhaust stain actually took me a few tries until I was satisfied. Glad you like it.

I must say that this 1/32 and 1/48 builder has been slowly coming around some 1/72 scale subjects. Some of these smaller scale models pack as much details as the larger ones and take up less display space.

Your Hellcat looks simply fantastic all around with just the right weathering. Those pre painted bases are pretty sharp too. I have a couple in my stash for future use. Great job.

A cracking job, mate! I like the faded sun bleached look on the paint work! Thanks for the heads up regarding the clear coat on gloss paint orange peeling; I'll be wary of that going forward.

Cheers,

Martin : )

Thank You pj, Joe and Martin. Those are high praises indeed and I humbly appreciate them.

pj- I know what you mean. When I got back into the hobby some 6 yrs ago my stash was almost all 1/48 scale with, I think, 3 1/72 thrown in. I truly thought that this was where my niche was going to be. Then a over a year ago I tried my hand at a 1/72 FW 190. I found that I still had the eye sight and dexterity to build in this scale. Not to mention that I found it rather fun. I was still on the fence about 1/48 vs 1/72 when my wife one day just happened to say " Why don't you only build the smaller models while you can still see them and then build the bigger ones". What an epiphany from she who knows all wisdom. Since then my 1/72 stash has grown substantially. And yes, display space plays a huge role in this also.

Ahh, very smart lady indeed. She has a very good point to eventually move up to 1/24th! Geeked

That's so well done I thought it was 1/48. Very well done! Impressive work.

Your attention to details, the fading in the paint, and the weathering are all top notch work. It's easy to compliment it all. You've earned it. :)

Thank You very much Bish. Coming from the Jedi of 1/72 modeling that means a lot to me. (FYI, I also posted finished pics over on the '44 GB).

Yes indeed Bish, I too feel a shift in the force. It seems that I'm encountering a few who would be intrigued and thus swayed.Big Smile
