I forgot to mention above, but I botched the paint job on this aircraft. The demarcation line should have been higher and in the center of the decals, but when I sprayed it I found it to be too low. And it would have required a repaint to correct and I just didn't have it in me. I'll have to live with this one as it is I'm afraid.

If this had been a nicer kit I would have repainted it. I just needed a "completion" fix. Wink

Hey Brandon, you did a sweet piece of modeling on that old mold. Really nice paint work especially on your balkenkruez. Those turned out sharp.

Joe,

I like the Alclad Aqua Gloss more than the Klear Kote. I had trouble getting the Klear to harden on the kit I tried it on, but that was over Tamiya paint. I haven't tried it over Mr Color, which is my go-to paint now. It may work better. The Aqua Gloss dries fast, minutes, but has a relatively low sheen. It makes a great sealer but not perfect for prepping for decals. Overall, I prefer the Testers Gloss Clear for sealing paint and prepping for decals, I've had far more luck with it. But again, I need to give the Klear a go over Mr Color.

Toshi,

The antenna method is very easy. I use fishing line that I cut and then using a permanent marker I drag the line over the marker to make it black. Then using only Micro Kristol Klear white glue I place a small dab on the mast and settle the line into it and let it dry. Then I repeat the process for the tail and us Tamiya tape to hold it secure while it dries. Once it's dry I gently snip the line at the mounting point and then remove the tape so as not to disturb the line.

You can get the line pretty straight and the white glue holds very well once dry. If you make a mistake just lift it off and do it again, it doesn't harm the paint at all. For the line to the fuselage I cut a piece to fit the space first then applied a dab to the end of the short bit and touched it to the main line and the white glue is thick enough to hold it at that point. Again, let it dry for hour or so, then a small dab on the fuselage and using tweezers I placed the other end in the white dab and once it dries it's perfectly clear.

Then I just take some color on a small brush and touch up the upper portion of the masts to hide the wire at the junction. I then use the white glue on a tooth pick to apply small dabs where the insulators rest and let that dry. Then I paint those a light grey color to simulate the insulators. It works pretty well for that.

I've used super glue many times and it just doesn't work too well and the white glue is pretty forgiving. I have hit the wire a few times already and it didn't come loose. Super glue breaks every time. I've started using the Micro Kristol Klear on most, if not all, my PE, canopy and medium to small bits and it holds great. You don't get any paint issues like you do with Tamiya ultra thin and no frosting on glass like super glue. It's the best stuff ever. With a small drop of water from a Q-tip and a couple minutes the white glue will release and wipe off if you need to remove a bit or correct it once your done. Try that with anything else.

Everyone else,

Thanks for the positive comments. I will attempt to get some better photos later today and show it off a bit better. I'm not too please with the shots I have now.

BK

Gee Brandon, your building technique overcame any difficiency the kit had as you explained, I couldn't see any at all.  That's how good you built it!  I love the in air photos.  I have a question?  How do you do a antennae line like that?  What do you use and how is it done?  That's just way too realistic and amazing.

Nice work Brandon.  I would love to try an in-flight display some day but I don't have the nerve to try it.  Thanks for sharing...

......and how do you like the Aqua Alclad Gloss?  I use the other one...

Wow, that's a stellar idea. I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to give it a go. And yes, the last photo is in it's resting place near the Spit. Better lighting I guess. Good idea there.

Yeah, I was confused for a moment as well.  Hell, for an Airfix kit...this turned out rather well.  Do you have the same set up for hanging in the last photo?  It seems to have photographed better.  If at all possible, you may want to even try filming this against a natural sky.  You can photoshop whatever pops up in your picture that you may not want....at least for the sake of having a picture reference of it.  It's not as hard as you think.  I do it in iPhoto on my MacBook Pro.  It's super easy.  I'll look for a few pics if you want to see before and afters.

Bish,

Exactly. I needed some progress while I was building the Zvezda kit, so I through this one together to give myself the since of accomplishment. It was a fairly hurried build and felt good.

Thanks, BK

I was a bit confused by your header for a minute. So you built this while also building a Zvezda F-4. That looks like a pretty nice build to me, good work.

Okay guys,

Before I start I have to apologize for the quality of the photos. I got in a hurry and got the plane ready to hang before I was ready to shoot it and it's too much of a PITA to start over on that. So, the photos are while it's hanging and the quality of the shots suffered. My apologies.

Now, on to the bird. This is an older Airfix kit, 1978 and the detail is not that great. It reminds me of the older Revell/Monogram kits in its detail. I always intended to make this a hanger and I don't put all the bells and whistles on those as they don't get the up close looks the other kits do. Other than the antenna, there are no add on parts. It is 100% OOB.

The fit wasn't too bad on this one and I really only had to fill the wing roots and trim the cowl panels to fit like they should. The cowl guns and exhaust are molded in to the cowls and all I did was hand paint them using MM rust and black. The overall kit was painted with Mr Color 118 and 119, RLM 78 and 79.

I did use my Alliance Modelworks 1/48 German Stencil set on this one though. I have never really been happy with decal insignia's and I went ahead and painted these one by airbrush. So, the upper and lower wings were painted with the metal stencils and they look pretty good. I had to use the stencils to cut tape masks out for the sides due to the curve and the metal allows for too much over spray if they don't lay just right. And they too, don't look half bad. Certainly better than decals. IMPO. the rest of the decals were used however.

Once I had the kit painted I cleared it with Aqua Gloss and used Flroy black on the panel lines and FLory Grime on the larger surfaces to fade the color some. This was shot down in 42 over Malta. The pilot was Karl-Heinz Krahl. I did go ahead and paint him up and place him in the pit and it came out decent.

This is a pretty basic kit and didn't really give me too many issues. Certainly not like the Spit I did from the same kit. These both came out of the "Dog Fight Series" and were both older molds. The 109 was far better than the Spit to build.

I'm sure I am overlooking many things you have questions on so feel free to ask. I spent about 25 hours on this kit overall. If you guys want to see how the build went go the the Aces GB. It's all posted in there.

Thanks for looking.

BK
