Revell F-86
Posted by JohnnyK on Thursday, July 9, 2015 4:19 PM
I just finished my Revell F-86. After I took the photos I realized that the words U.S. AIR FORCE are crooked. Also, I thought that I got rid of all the decal silvering, but I guess not. First I primed the model, then I painted it with Testors rattle can Aluminum Plate. I then painted the model with Testors Metalizer Sealer. Then I gave it a final coat of Testors Aluminum Plate. I buffed the paint with 12,000 grit sanding pads.

Looks great!...Bummer about the decals.  Sometimes they move on you.  Did you use any decal setting solution?  It helps prevent silvering.

Yeah, I've had that happen with my decals too. Nice duo!

I think the problem  regarding the silvering is that I did not paint the model with a clear gloss prior to applying the decals. I buffed the Testors Metalizer paint with 12000 grit sanding pads which gave the paint a grain similar to real aluminum. If I painted the model with gloss paint the grain would dissappear. So I just applied the decals over the Testors Metalizer Sealer. I then painted the decals with clear flat acrylic paint. Under certain lighting conditions the decal carrier film is noticable.

I always liked the looks of the F86 Saber. The F-84 had a really thin body, wher as the Saber had a bulked-up body and swept wings. The F86 just looked like a classic jet fighter.

This seems to be a really popular kit to build. You did a great job, I may have to do one of these some day.

Keep in mind that this kit is very old and has a lot of flash that has to be removed. Also, the plane has raised panel lines. One of the reasons that I bought this kit was to practice on a kit with raised panel lines so that I would be prepared to build Revell's 1:48 B-29 as a winter project.

Pretty slick! I know what you mean about crooked decals, I've done the same thing and torn them all up trying to 'unstick' them with more solvent and move them. Might be better to leave them as is.

I was thinking of trying to remove the decal, but I decided not to do that for concern of damaging the Metalizer finish. Somebody suggested decal solvent and Scotch Tape. But the tape would also peel off the model's finish. Oh well, next time I will be more careful.
