1/48 Revell Mig-21PF build
Posted by Mustang8376 on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 10:57 AM
I am in the process of building Revell's Mig-21PF for a work competition. Needs to be completed by end of September. Currently have the cockpit completed, which is Aerobonus Mig-21PFM pilot, but it is the only quality pilot I could find. Enjoy.

Current build: 1/48 Monogram A-1H & AMT Jedi Starfighter.

Completed:  1/48 Monogram/Revell P-61B, 1/32 Hasegawa F6F-5, 1/48 Hasegawa F-16C, 1/48 Revell Mig-21PFM, 1/48 Revell/Monogram AH-64A, Revell/Monogram 1/48 F-14D, AMT 1/420 USS Defiant, AMT 1/650(?) USS Enterprise, 1/72 Bandai VF-1J, AMT 1/537 USS Reliant, Academy 1/35 M1-A1 Abrams, Academy 1/48 F-86F30, Linbergh's USS Gato

The pilot helps to "liven" up things in that 'pit.

the best thing for a skimpy cockpit, is to add that pilot!

If anyone ever wants to build Revell's version of the Mig-21, just to let you know...it's sparse. My pilot looks like a midget due to the seat looking smaller than the kit seat. Also it builds up quickly, nowhere near as many steps as Eduards. To show you what I mean: Sub Assemblies: Which one to use:

Current build: 1/48 Monogram A-1H & AMT Jedi Starfighter.

Completed:  1/48 Monogram/Revell P-61B, 1/32 Hasegawa F6F-5, 1/48 Hasegawa F-16C, 1/48 Revell Mig-21PFM, 1/48 Revell/Monogram AH-64A, Revell/Monogram 1/48 F-14D, AMT 1/420 USS Defiant, AMT 1/650(?) The smaller tail is for the earlier PF version. The wider chord tail with the braking chute housing at the base of the rudder is the later version.

Stikpusher, I recall that from my research, but what I am running into is that I prefer the wider chord for the Mig.  Yet, the version I am building used the narrow chord in August 1968 with Red identification stripes (from Eduard's Mig-21PF weekend edition cover box).  Yet I am still using the kit supplied decals.  Go figure. :)

OK, you're doing a Fishbed from the Czech invasion in the summer of '68? Doing some image searches and the wider chord tail fin seems to be more common on export PFs sent to Soviet client states, than on ones for Soviet use.

That is what I am seeing, I've only found at least one picture (possibly two) in my sources at home with a Russian PF with the wide chord.

Good lookin' build. I built that one two or three years ago. Didn't spend as much time on it and didn't come out as nice. I threw a tarp over the canopy based on what I'd seen in reference pics of an old museum bird perched somewhere in Europe. Anyway, here's pics of mine:

Applied some putty to the seams.  Still getting the hang of the Perfect Putty, but it is a great product.  Also had to redo the antennae on the front of the plane, slightly out of scale, but I'm enjoying it.

Following this one for sure. You're doing a fine yeoman's job on this kit.  My Monogram B-26 fits up similar to this one. Every time I add a part, I hafta fix it.

Just a heads up, build is on hold until some house repairs. Kinda hard to build with no electricity over your workstation! :(

Hey Mustang,  I did this kit for the Mono Mafia GB.  I feel your pain.  It lacks the luster of modern kits, but man she is fun to do!  And you are doing an awesome job!  Really like the build!  Great work!

Back at it now!  Primed it with Tamiya white primer.  yes it is white, no idea why it shows up as gray in the photos.  Have to take care of some runs from where I sprayed, but overall I am happy with how it is coming along.   As for the drop tank... that is a whole other story.

It's coming along nicely. Looking good. I always thought that this bird looked like a rocket when viewed from certain angles. Certainly a unique jet. Looking forward to seeing it in paint.

Great looking MiG, Mustang! I love those Soviet jets that just look plain mean. Something about jets of that era, whether MiGs, Sukhois, Phantoms or many others, they just look incredibly warlike.

Can't wait to see it as you progress.

Actually not bad in regards to putty. It looked better once I took the tape off since most of the putty was on the tape. Quick little update, spraying the nose cone green then I will be masking it in preparation for the NMF. Black undercoat then the Alclad.

Sprayed the black, just waiting for the paint to dry completely so I can sand some rough spots and runs. Will post pictures tomorrow.

This will be fixed:

Worked on some of the issues from the last set of pictures.  Might have to sand down the raised panel lines and rescribe due to lost detail.

Sanded down

Resprayed, will have to buff out the minor scratches that I can see in the picture, not easily seen in person.:

First time scribing, and it sucks.  Just thought I should add that. :)  Looks worse than what it actually is, but since I lost the raised detail on the top of the wings, had to scribe the panels for painting.  Will sand down and repaint the top blalck coat soon.
