Hey Owl- you're certainly up for challenges....kudos to you. You mention panel line shading, and I'd like to share something I read recently. A guy who used to hang out here, DoogsATX (Matt) has a blog. It's got some useful ideas, I think, and he's come up with this alternative to panel line shading that he calles black basing. It's a result of this issue which seems to be somewhat misunderstood in the modelling community.

Just for clarity, I'm not trying to 'stir the pot' here; rather, I'm simply hoping to share a technique and an alternate point of view in hopes of adding to the 'modeler's toolbox.' Panel line shading can produce some very nice effects, but maybe 'black basing' can serve as alternative approach to a realistic finish and possibly lead to other variations on weathering/wear and tear?

Dave

oh, yeah. Ive seen that come up before! I apparently do black-basing on a frequent basis, as I prime all my kits with a dark enamel before I airbrush (helps the acrylic paints stick better).

On one of my next builds, I want to try some more of that splotchy technique by shading with different colors!

Your AB skills look fine to me. What part of it do you think you need to work on??

Thanks, man!

I need to work on all of it? Ive gotten pretty used to handbrushing my models since I dont have a set up for spraying. The only time I can crack out the airbrush is when the weather is mild enough for me to work in the garage. In Nebraksa, that means only half the year is open!  Dunce

But I am trying to work on the smooth panel shading Ive seen others pull off. Im probably my worst critic, but my airbruching still seems too heavy handed. A lot of my shading keeps getting covered up...Oops

Some cool masking you're got going on there in the last photo Owl, I'm looking forward to what sort of camo you're aiming for when you take it off.

BTW: Just looking at the photos and I'd swear you're using the salt mask technique to paint your nails!

hey, mabe I was! :P

My friend brought over a product called "crackle polish". When it dries, it creates a bunch of cracks in the nail polish. We added the red paint over that to give our fingers a "bloody" look...Thats about the only time I've worn nail polist, too! :P

The camo Im going for is based off one of my favorite game series, ACE COMBAT. In particular, your arch nemisis "Yellow 13".

Looks like it was a good weekend. I haven't touched my AB in a couple of weeks and I'm itching, lol.

Yeah, I know that effect - the overspray gets off the flesh in hours, but stays on the nails for days, eh?

Not assuming too much is good for you most of the time!

Have a nice day

I try not to assume... too much lol. Besides, I'm constantly overspraying my left hand and getting funny looks for it. lol

Nicely done Owl. I love the modifications so far, and dang, you have some patience with that putty lol!!

On a side note; Either that's a lot of overspray on your fingernails, or you paint them lol. My left thumbnail is usually black or O.D. lol!

ha! the finger paint is left over from yhe zombie walk i went to. i just havent washed it all off yet :P

Mike - of course you know that girls sometimes paint their fingernails, don't you?

Miss Owl - way to go! Don't ever let a kit stop you from building a nice model :-)

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Yeah, that looks like fun!

Just for more kicks, here's what I found on the net, that could step it up even more:

This one looks like LEGO bricks AND has yellow in it:

Crazy Czech people did this one:

How about a classic? Wouldn't you like to do something in Polish markings? (I couldn't help it!)

Whatever you do, I'm looking forward to see that paint job! Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Hello!

I just love the name - Bondo-Bee! Now that it's Howlin'-Mad-Crazy I start to like it again. Any idea to mke the paint scheme matching crazy? I'm looking forward to how it's going to turn out, good luck with it and have a nice day

Paweł

I was calling it the "yellow jacket", and thought of giving the plane a bright scheme to match. Yellow jacket, yellow belly, yellow...13?

Owl,  your build logs are always entertaining.  Will the landing gear support that much putty?  :)

Great work on what appears to be a bear of a kit! Look forward to seeing how it looks when you're done with it :) Cheers, Martin

the basic kit oob is OK, just with that mucked up nose. If you've built a classic monogram kit, you can build this one no problem.

I'm just doing a bunch of weird stuff to mine ;)
