Club Challenge: Kangnam Hornet
Posted by CallSignOWL on Sunday, August 2, 2015 9:44 AM

My IPMS club recieved a generous donation from a local hobby store: three dozen or so kits of an F-18 to give away to kids that entered our "juniors" category at the contest. We didnt have three dozen kids enter, so kits that were left over were given out to club members.....on one condition!

If the kit isn't finished by our November meeting, that individual will have to donate at least $10 to the Toys for Tots foundation. Our club makes a donation every year anyway, but this challenge will help give a little bit more joy this holiday season  :)

A couple resident master-modelers have already started their kits, and watching their progress has made me wanna crack open mine.

If you havent heard of Kangnam, dont worry. You dont need to. The kits seems some sort of hybrid between this company's own molds and the old monogram kit. The landing gear are pretty much exact castings of the monogram parts!

the first thing you see when opening the box, are the two fuselage halves. Join them together and....uh. Hmmmm. I dunno guys, but something looks OFF.  Hmm

THAT NOSE LOOKS FUNKY!!!!  Indifferent

Good luck, from the looks of it, you might need it with this one.

I sense a sudden shortage of Squadron Green Putty in your locale ......................

...................OTOH, if you have experience assembling any early 1990s era Monogram aircraft kits you are well up to the challenge.

I look forward to viewing this build. Big Smile

yeah, the detail and feel of the plastic is very reminicent of monogram. Test fits so no major issues, but Im going to attempt to correct that nose and add a more detailed cockpit. Fingers grossed that doesnt cause too much surgery!

The second thing you notice about this kit, is that the cockpit is pretty wimpy. Its just short. The seat isnt much too look at either...

here is the tub compared to a spare pit (from the monogram F-8). the shallow-ness is pretty apparent.

so, I decided to use the cockpit and an ejection seat from the spares box instead. As mentioned, the pit is from an F-8 kit, while the ejection seat is from the monogram Mig-29

added some belts from tape...

and gave everything a nice paint job!

The nose is something to consider, but you did a great job with the cockpit.

I hope you test-fit the cockpit with the seat in it with the canopy.  I built some monogram Hornets a while back using an AM pit designed for the monogram kit and found I couldn't put the canopies fully down with the seats installed.  Not sure if I screwed something up, but that seat looks really high.

On the nose, I do not envy you that project.  If you happen to have a monogram Hornet around you might almost be better off making a casting of the nose cone (or several to share with all the other guys!).

I love the finish by November stipulation, that's awesome!

ha, youre gonna love my next post....

but yeah, Ill be separating the one-piece canopy on this build. Like other parts, the canopy is just too shallow! Having it open will help hide that issue, as well as allow plenty of clearance for the bang seat

Funny detail! The vertical stabs are completly undersized!! Wo ever made this kit took the side-view drawings as scale and must've forgotten that the verts are ANGLED! As such, the tails are about 1/4 inch too short! The resident resin guru has offered to make castings of the hasegawa tails for people in the club to use as replacements.

After much trimming and cursing, the cocpit finally fits where it is supposed to! Sheesh. There was just not enough room in the nose to add as deep of a pit as you needed!

Got the nose all spread out, but one half was a bit wider than the other half, and things got sanded flat. A bit of bondo helped re contour things. The split shots were added as weight just incase the balance is thrown off

Conformal fuel tanks blended in. Wing tabs not helping, gotta blend those in too

Owl, either you're braver than myself or insane (maybe both). Propeller

I think I'd turn the thing upside down, leave off the wings, and add a bunch of spare parts to make a spaceship outta it. So your whole club is subjecting yourselvies to this!?!

What you've got so far looks good though! Wink

Looks like its coming along pretty good.  But man, thats more bondo than what was on my 63 Dodge.

Reminds me of the Monogram 1/48 F-14 fit after installing the cockpit tub and trying to fit the folding wing assemblies.

Oh, I'm petty sure I'm insane.... The base kit goes together just fine, it's my additions that require the putty!

the basic kit oob is OK, just with that mucked up nose. If you've built a classic monogram kit, you can build this one no problem.

I'm just doing a bunch of weird stuff to mine ;)

Owl,  your build logs are always entertaining.  Will the landing gear support that much putty?  :)

I was calling it the "yellow jacket", and thought of giving the plane a bright scheme to match. Yellow jacket, yellow belly, yellow...13?
