Zinc Chromate

In the seventies I worked for a major airframe company.  They received a big batch of zinc chromate spray cans, and receiving inspection bounced the batch because the (green) color was slightly out of spec.  They sold the batch to a local surplus store.

I was building a homebuilt (1:1 scale) at the time, so I joined several of my buddies, rushing to the store to buy a dozen cans at a really cheap price!

I am surprised Vought used a salmon color. In my experience with military aircraft, hydrualic fluid has a redish color that would make it difficult to spot on a salmon background. In other words, it would make it difficult to spot hydraulic fluid leaks.

 

And could well be the reason why they didn't use it for long.
