This should be interesting. I don't think I have seen the Revell kit built before, its usually the Italeri.

I have this kit in Testors 1/48. It's nearly 3 ft long. I am hoping to do it this next year. I'm curious how this one you're doing will turn out. You're probably already done before I get this typed out.

We have not had any on here for a while. There used to be a member who used to work on these and had some great advice on painting them. Black is not as wasy to do as one might think. Pity he does not sem to have been on in a while.

Alway loved Habu, they were next door to us at Beale AFB just out of Marysville, CA when I was working B-52G's there in '73.  Pretty amazing what Kelly and crew put together with pencil, paper, sliderules and very limited computing power.  What they had for computer then would probably fit on one chip with enough room left over for a 3rd generation smart phone today.  And had to make most of the tools and figure out how to work with the materials for her.

Have seen a lot of them in flight, but never with the drone.  Boeing has one of the trainers (with the hump) in the collection at Boeing.Field in south Seattle/Tukwilla.

Night takeoffs were a trip and a hallf back then when the whole flightline would go to black out conditions...........

Was a riot to watch a tanker scramble off the ground and a half hour later the SR roll out and leisurely hit the air.  Leak fuel like a sieve until they heat up and self seal; SR is in the refuel track over Lake Tahoe going where is my tanker at, hope he gets here soon...........

It seems the only heavy multi colored painting is reserved for the cockpit.  It is very well detailed for a 1:72 kit.  See the photos below.

Nice work on the pits.  To show all that off you should brobably have the canopies open, closed will hide most of it.

Habu is also a desert wind/sandstorm type event that I think was more the source of that nickname.

Never got closer than about 50 feet to one and that was at an open house/air show at Beale. (T-birds were in F4-E's then, and saw them again at Shaw AFB in SC wen they had gone to F16's) She was roped off to that distance and cockpit glass covered along with FOD covers and exhaust covers on the engines.  Unless you were attached to the 9th, you got nowhere near their hangers.  We came on the flightline and turned right to get to the BUFF's.  It was easier for us to get on the nuke allert pad than it would have been to get into the 9th's area.

You won't want to weather much.  They got well maintained and touched up since Mach 3 would burn and discolor some paint.  They were never parked for very long outside unless they were somewhere else after a landing where they weren't stationed.  Otherwise they were always under cover in a hanger.

Pretty detailed cockpit you got there.  The SR-71 is such an iconic aircraft its a wonder I never built one in 32 years of model building. Oh wait, its about the parking space.  lol

I suppose when painting black youd need to do some postshading using a lightened, well, shade of black.

A IBM PC-AT System 2 with an Intel 80386 and 8 megabytes of RAM from 1989 was more powerful than all of NASA's computer capacity for the Apollo missions to the Moon.

I got to see one in the Wright Patterson AF Museum in OH and none of my photos came out. Too dark. We had one land at night at my base during a heavy rain, low ceiling night. The flightliine when black, it taxied, refueled and took off again. I got to sit on the flightline and watch the whole thing. Awesome sight to see that take off at night.  He went full afterburner and about 100 feet or so off the deck he went full nose up and disappeared into the clouds. We could here it roar for the longest time. Seemed like 30 minutes. I will never forget that.

I was on Google Earth one day looking at sat images of the aircraft disposal and storage facility and actually say a couple of those drones sitting out behind a shed or something.  Hopefully they end up in a museum and not a 12 pack.

Check out Habu on the web and you'll find a bunch of references to the small, highly poisonous snake found in Okinawa, where a number of SR-71's were stationed. Habu.org has a lot of info and pictures of the plane.

"When the A-12s (and later the SR-71s) were first flown to their new remote base at Kadena AFB in Okinawa, the local people thought that this strange and somewhat wicked-looking airplane was shaped like the habu snake.  They started calling it the habu airplane, and later just habu.  Crews who flew the airplane were also called Habu, and the name came to be recognized with the blackbird program and even incorporated into the insignia worn by the crews on their uniforms. ", from habu.org.

There are a number of planes that have images of the snake on them and there a lot of images and lore about the plane on various websites, its worth a google search.

When we went to California to visit my brother, he took us to Castle Air Museum in Atwater and the first plane I saw as we entered the parking lot was a Blackbird.  There are no markings or numbers on her.  All the planes there are chained off and are only opened up two days a year.  Right next to it is the Douglas VC-9C that was in the Presidential Fleet.  Great place but would be a lot better if you could go aboard and check them out.
