Revell A-400 Grizzly 1/72 (FINISHED)
Posted by Wilbur Wright on Monday, February 1, 2016 4:43 PM

Hi Men,  I thought I would show the progress on this nice kit. It's a lot of work. The line decals on top of the model are Micro-Scale, which luckily were left over from my B-36 build. The Revell line (no step area) decals from the kit disintegrated and were impossibly fragile even with my steady hand.

Even working with the Micro-Scale decals took a lot of time.  I'm in the home stretch, but it still may be a month or more. I treated the props as a separate job, and they are finished.  I'll fully photograph when finished and I'm just hoping for no disasters at the finish line. The masks are Eduard.  I started this last March so this will be almost a year in progress along with my Meng D9 which is also in the home stretch.  So two rather complex models in the last 12 months.  Note: The "Moire" from the digital file may be affecting the way you see the lines.

That is an impressive build. The A400M is a great looking aircraft.

That's really cool. Imagine that in 1/48 scale. OOFF! Nice work.

Thank You Gentlemen,

Again, I will post more photos when complete.  Brandon, I have built the Italeri C-130 in 48th scale, which there are photos of on here somewhere. I was just yesterday thinking how much bigger this aircraft would be in 1/48th than my C-130.

Thanks

That IS really nice work Wilbur, I find it interesting you had trouble with the kit decals, I have seen other build on other forums and no one else reported any issues with the decals. Something I need to keep an eye on when I build mine. I have 2 of these in the stash and can't decide on schemes for them.

Wow!  I have wanted to build this plane but looks like it would take too much patience.  You have done a great job on it, and it looks impressive.                               gk

Looks awesome! I'd love to have the space for the 1/72 but I have the 1/144, that will have to do.

Well I finished this build which was started in March of 2015 (Along with a Meng D9).  I used Tamiya masking tape for curves (2mm) to paint the prop edge steel.  The props edges were very difficult to paint in the vortex position. As stated before the top fuselage line decals were unusable they were so thin, and I have a lot of experience with these. I replaced with Superscale generic line decals. The Eduard mask set was used.

This is a fantastic kit. I suppose like every model if I built it again I would get a better result from my experience on this one.  I painted the headlights white instead of leaving them clear.  Keep in mind digital "Moire" may be affecting straight lines when viewing.  I highly recomend this kit for anyone that wants a year-long big build.

Excellent job.  If you bring it to a show be sure to include a note for the judges that the prop blades are definitely on in the correct orientation.  The judges might not know that they were designed this way for great stability and reduced vibration in the air.

Thanks Men!

I had some decal silvering problems even after three coats of MM gloss laquer.  I have to reasses my pre decal gloss process. Someone suggested Alclad Aqua Gloss. I'm not sure about spraying Future on a large model where orange peel would be more likely to happen.

While I'm a good photographer in general, my model photo skills are still developing.

I will try to get some shots that can enlarge on the screen for a closer view of the model.
