That's a great finish, and a wonderful gift and tribute for your friend's dad!  Well done!

I've got the AZ Models 1/48 kit in my stash, and you've given me impetus to move it up in my queue.

Hi, Oz -

What a fine gesture, this presentation will no doubt be greatly appreciated by the old gentleman, so good of you to honor him with this well crafted model.

I think the camo job looks just perfect, interesting colors and well applied. All around very nice job, thanks for the post and photos.

I'm hoping my friend's dad will like it. Next Monday, April 25, is Australia's (and New Zealand's) big military remembrance day of the year, Anzac Day, and so that's when my mate's dad will first see his Vultee Vengeance model.

If it's block letters, I taped and air brushed some on to a kit I built once.  With a sheet of white decal paper you might be able to print a thin outline of the letter you want on to the paper with your laser printer or inkjet. Then carefully cut with an exacto knife.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Very nice build Ozmac! Toast  I'm sure your friend and his dad will love it and really appreciate your efforts.  Take a pic when the presentation is made.  Would love to see it.

Thanks for the tip re the "E"s. The problem turned out getting the right grey colour onto a printed E, plus my ham-fisted attempts at cutting a truly nice, grey E that looked like it belonged with the other letters. We ended up deciding the A just looked a perfect match, and my home-made Es didn't!

Sweet that! Weird looking plane, eh?

If you wanted to try, making "E's" out of "A's" or scrap white decal might not be too hard.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

That is one sweet bird you've done. The camo looks perfect. I do like the Aussie scheme though. You've done your friend's dad proud.

I have always been a sucker for unusual/little known WW2 aircraft. I've been eyeing a Vultee for a while now.

Vultee Vengeance WWII dive bomber

Here's something I don't often build: a military plane, but this one is a special request for a friend. The plane is a Vultee Vengeance in Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) livery. This was a dive bomber which did sterling work in the Pacific during the Second World War. My friend's 95-year-old father was a Vultee pilot, and so when he bought the kit and asked me to build it for his dad, naturally enough I said "yes, of course'.

The kit is 1/72, made by the Czech outfit Special Hobby. It included resin parts for the cockpit, engine and a few other bits. Its one mistake was providing a single .30 cal machine gun, where all the Aussie Vultees had twin .30 cals (and later on, they even had .50 cals). So I have attempted to add an extra barrel to make it a twin .30.

The great find was an after-market decal maker who even had the correct markings for my friend's dad's 24th squadron. Unfortunately, the markings for his dad's plane (E GR) weren't available, but A GR was, and so he has a 24th squadron plane to look at.

The plane has been built with the wheels up (which is why it is sitting on paint pots), as my friend's dad lives at an ex-servicemen's retirement village, and they have a display cabinet of models there, and the Vultee is going to be suspended from wires/lines in "flight" in the display.

I don't have much experience with camouflage or military models in general, so it was nerve-wracking to build this thing. I know the sharp lines on the camouflage isn't authentic, but I decided the best I could do with my beginner's skills was a relatively clean build. I hope the old flyer enjoys it.
