Actually, it is a wolf, I decided on as my avatar on several sites,  picked for the 4 wheel drive club I formed in NE Oregon and named Wolfpack 4x4's since the Advisory Council for BLM that I serve on was working on the wolf plan at the time.  It is one of those "please don't mess with me right now" smiles/snarls.  Matches my temperment most of the time.  We actually taught our Samoyed to do that when we gave her a "Smile Pretty" command.

That one (RF4C) was flown by Col. Robin Olds out of Ubon.  He came up with an op to sucker the MIG's into an air to air fight, by coming in on a flight profile like a 105 strike.  Was a show on one of the history channels on it.  Well worth watching.  The Tamiya 1/32 "C/D" kit has decals for it as well.

I bought the Academemy 1/48 F4C which also has parts for an F4D. Kinda expensive but is an elaborate kit. It has the markings for the very F4 I viewed in the USAF museum in Dayton. Here's a shot of the real one. On the shelf--Can't wait!

I have a Hasegawa RF4E in 1/48 and a "G" that came from another member here.  Got started on the RF and then buried under a bunch of other stuff at the house.  That one is pretty claen and looked good so far.  I have not opened the "G" except to loook at it, but it looks OK as well.

I have an RF, G and somewhere the old E in 1/32 from Revell.  I would recommend getting some aftermarket seamless intake trunks for those, but otherwise haven't fooled with them yet.   They are typical centerline fuselage seams

The Tamiya 1/32 goes together alright by gluing and screws for the major components.  Would also get some seamless intake trunks fo theirs if I did another one. They are tough to fill and sand as kit parts. Has metal landing gear with styrene overlays, should hold up well.  The fuselage goes together as top and bottom, and along panel lines.  The bottom piece behind the exhaust fits a little wonky, but easily fixed.  Have not run into major problems with it so far.

With your skill set, you shoudn't have major problems with any of these.

 

No experience with other kits or scales yet.

The guidelines for the Group Build was no piston engine aircraft, though turbo-props would be aceptable. 

Yeah, the Phantom design is almost as old as I am, but I had her in the stash and wanted to build as this aircraft, as the local Veterans home is getting in the 'Nam era guys now.

 

For those of us who worked on them, we still have a love/hate relationship with the old girl, especially having actually worked on the particular airframe.

With work and gettting started on the sub GB, have not got too much more done on her in the past week or so.  Did get the lower wing/fuselage on and the wheel well sides in.  Not shown is I did manage to get the wheel wells painted, along with the underside of the upper wing sections.  Am going to do a little detail painting before I nail down the uppers.  Easier with access from top and bottom.

Got the wing/fuselage bottom on today, along with the underside behind the engines.  Also got the front and rear wheel house panels in the lower wing, the wing fold hinge plate on the upper sections. and the radome and cooling scoops on her.  Will put up some pics after fill and sand.  She is beginning to look more and more like an old donkey d***  "D"

 

Got a response from the Phantom Society forum that was not a real clearcut answer, but referenced a couple more pics showing her without the external mirrors.  Am going to go without, I like the cleaner look.  Have decided to have the canopies open on her since she will be in a plexi case, so dust won't be an issue.

Don't know which way to go...have seen pics of her in both mirror configurations.  With right and left on the WSO canopy (top clean) and without any on the rear canopy.  Both had the same number of stars on the intake ramp.  So either the mirrors were either fairly easy to take on and off depending on the particular WSO's preference, or she had a canopy change for some reason.  And if the canopy change which way did it go.......in Icar's pic in '74 she had mirrors.  No date on the other pics without, but one was at Udorn.

Got a little more done.  Intake trunks in and filled, ramps together and backsides painted and the fuselage painted behind where they fit.  Can also see the engine cans and fronts.  Still have to mask off and paint the trunks though.

 

**EDIT**  It is now Tuesday and I got the white painted on the inside of the intakes and trunks.  Now I can start on getting the rest of the fuselage buttoned up and the bottom on her.

We had a sign in the ECM pod shop I was in...Crossed pencil and a bullwhip and the title " Project Pencilwhip"  Squadron CO made us take it down....went to the inside of a cabinet door.

 

Got a little more done this week, intake trunks are in and now in primer and primed the fuselage behind the ramp plates.  Will get color on that tomorrow as well as the trunks.

I also just missed the 555th's CO's jeep door logo.  "555th TFS-Largest Distributor of MIG Parts in SEA".  Inspectors made them get rid of it---not authorized.

Got the pit attached to the upper fuselage, and started on the intake trunks......seams galore.  Got the back halves filled and sanded with 220, and screwed to the upper fuse as well, will glue the fronts down tomorrow and finish the fill and sand on them.

That was the pic I referred to, you sent it to me awhile back with that question.  Only thing I could think of was some squadrons might have allowed live fire practice kills to be put on.  I remember the 6 stars on her, but the firebee never registered on me.  Looks like she has a left side mirror and pretty definite on the right side one.  Top of canopy edge on WSO's canopy looks clean though.

Here you go, I caught her at Korat when she did a stop over.  I got the shot while driving along the edge of the flightline on patrol in 1974. 

Why is there a Firebee marked there too?

I am doing this one for the Modern GB, and figured to put her here as well for those that don't get into the GB page.

Tamiya 1/32 F4-C/D kit with an Eduard cockpit PE set and a set of Print Scale decals for the tail number in question.

As a little background, I actually worked on this aircraft when stationed at Udorn RTAFB in '73/74.  I missed getting pics of her in her glory with the stars on the intake by a week.  She had just got repainted as she was being re-deployed elsewhere.

Can anyone verify if she had the external mirrors on the WSO canopy?  The one pic I have of her it looks like she might have the two side ones but not the top one.

 

Even without flash the pit looks washed out.  Is MM dark gray, with about 25% interior black added to darken it up some more.

One more piece of PE to put on and ready to screw into the upper fuselage.  

Hope to do her justice as I'm planning on putting her in a case and giving to the local Veteran's Home here in town that opened last year.  They are starting to get the 'Nam Vet's in now, as we got up there in years.
