Bicentennial collection
Posted by Darren Roberts on Monday, July 4, 2016 10:52 AM

Here's my annual post of my Bicentennial collection. I added a couple more this year. Hopefully I'll be done for next year's IPMS National Convention and will be able to display them all on one table. For those who aren't Americans, I hope you enjoy the color of them and forgive my national pride. The first one is what will be finished shortly. I just couldn't quite get it done for today. All models are 1/48 scale.

A good start there.  One of my favorites was the F-106 from Jacksonville.  Shortly after patching enough decals together and finishing the model, they came out with a decal set.

Another would be the A-7D with the Minute Man on its tail.

Just a personal note:

There is no need for anyone to forgive your personal pride about being an American, or for you to feel that they should.  It's who and what you are and you should be proud of it.

Awesome builds. I have a few bicentenial builds lined up including an S2 Viking (same colours as yours), Trojan and F111 and a few others so I really appreciate looking at yours.

Please don't appologise for pride in your nation, that is to be applauded.

As I once heard said, ''British and American flags share the same colours - and those colours DON'T run''.

All the best.

Hello!

A very nice collection, those colours look very pretty on the contemporary aircraft. I just love the Stoof. Steel beach doesn't do 1/72 right? It's a pity!

Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

Super nice job on each of them! What a wonderful USA display!

Question: I'm going to be building the Hase 1/48 TA-4F for a friend of mine in the next few months (If I can ever finish my stringbagSmile). Were there any issues you ran into with your 4J kit? Did it require lots of nose weight?

It builds up just like the Hasegawa A-4 series....easy. I added a bit of weight in the nose just to make sure it stayed down. I can't tell you exactly how much. I just put in a few small fishing weights.

Ditto That is so cool to see some 40 years after that event. I hope that your collection of these birds grows in the future!

I've been thinking (dangerous I know Big Smile ) and looking through some googled pics of Bicentennial aircraft. Does anyone think a 'Spirit of 76' group build would be a good idea. I may even get a thumbs up from the wife as she was born in 76. Including 'whatif' schemes would add interest too.

All the best.

Cool models! Too bad the USAF rarely went for wild celebratory color schemes on its aircraft, unlike in Europe where you get some astounding decorations on the planes to celebrate a squadron's 50th anniversary or whatever. A book I have called Dressed to Kill: One-off Air Force Color Schemes by  Mark Attrill has wildly-colored planes that just beg to be modeled when you get tired of building yet another camouflage-gray project.

Overall, the USAF has some drab markings. I think that's why I tend to gravitate to Navy subjects. However, the USAF did have some rather nice Bicentennial markings. I want to finish the Navy ones before I think about starting in on those.
