Completed Tamiya 1/48 Dornier Do335A Phiel Arrow
Posted by Toshi on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 10:38 PM

I had built a Revell of Germany Arrow.  That came out really nice, especially the splinter camoflauge.  That was the first time I've ever done that.  Recently, I ended up breaking the Arrow, I made a promise to myself that I would build another 335A!  In the end, per a recommendation via a forum member, I purchased the Tamiya Kit.  It came with the canopy/wheel mask for $20.00 Including shipping.  I think I did really good on the cost of the model.

Ooo! it comes with a pilot figure! Nice! Watching... waiting... I'll give you five more minutes. You should be done by then, right? LOL!

Take your time and enjoy it my friend  :D  I'm very much looking forward to following your progress.

You scored on this deal I recon.

I am tuned in for this one, for some odd reason I never had one in the stash yet.

From what i have seen, this is a nice kit. I think we had a couple of these in the 335 GB. And if you want, you can ditch the scheme suggested and make up one of your own.

LOL!  LOL!  I definately will take my time.  This kit is 100% better than the Revell of Germany kit.  The only difference was that ROG kit had the optional trainer version called an Ardvark.  You could also build the single cockpit fighter version, Arrow.

I think this kit is able to convert into the Ardvark but I'm not sure yet.  I have yet to study my assembly manual.  I also haven't had the opportunity to see the review and build via YouTube.  Once I do my research I'll be able to start on the kit itself.  My friend, I am so honored that you continue to follow my build threads.  This means so much to me!  Thank you.

As for your comment on the pilot figure, LOL!  I'll take the extra time out to paint the figure.  Please be warned, my figures look like virus infected people from AMC Walking Dead!  LOL!  You really made my day.

Yes, I have to give credit to Mrs. Toshi.  It was Mrs. Toshi's patience of over two weeks that she found and purchased this kit with me!  By now if you noticed, I really enjoy unique WWII aircraft like the Horten and the Shinden.  One of my other favorite WWII aircraft is the 335A Phiel.  It just looks so odd that it's so cool, just like the Shinden.  You definately need to get one in your stash!  Thank you so much for the support you've given me, it means so much!

Yes, just by a simple visual, this kit far surpasses the Revell of Germany kit.  I could be wrong but I think the ROG kit is a re-box of the Revell kit.  I definately was considering a Night Fighter version!  Thank you so much Bish for your continued support in my builds!

Just guessing, but I believe the Revell and the ROG kits stem from the Monogram kit that first appeared in the early 70s. It was a real good kit at the time but is certainly showing its age now. I have this same Tamiya kit in my stash, sans canopy mask, but no idea when I might move it to the bench.

I think you are correct in that this is the old Monogram kit.  Unless someone knows otherwise.  Thank you for the information!

The ROG is a rebox of the old Monogram Pfeil. The Tamiya is lightyears ahead and builds up really nice just OOB. I built mine a while back for the Arrow GB and decided to open up a few panels and detail it with resin sets.

Well, i was thinking more of a standard fighter, but with a what if it entered service scheme. The one on the box was useon the prototype and is the one most people do. But had it entered full service, i have no doubt it would have had a differant scheme. The NF, of which there was a version intended, would have had radar fitted and would take a bt of work.

I did a lot of cutting and yes some of the resin parts specially the engines took a lot of fitting and fiddling around with. I did dot use any pe except for Eduard belts but it has a lot of added plumbing and wiring.

This will be fun.

Theuns beat me to the punch. I too don't know how I don't have a 335 hidden away somewhere. I only learned of the aircraft on my return to the hobby a few years back, and I think it is a very cool-looking aircraft.

You have fun and thanks in advance for sharing your WIP with us,  Toshi.

Seriously though, you have been turning out some beauties lately and you always seem to enjoy the hobby and your threads get some nice conversations going, so it's well deserved.

No progress pictures yet??! You're slowing down lol.

If any camouflage pattern is acceptable then that could give you some really cool artistic license freedom with this one. That sounds fun!  :D

LOL!  Thanks for the laugh today, I needed that!  I was working on my "Walking Dead" figure all day.  It's difficult for me to get it to where I would like to have it. Don't laugh when you see it.  LOL!

I think I'm going to recruit Mrs. Toshi and my daughter in picking the final coat of paint.  This will be fun to see what pleases their taste in camoflauge. Thanks for the support!

This is where I'm at for today.  I'm not sure on how to paint figures, I am assuming that I'll have to keep on painting figures to get better.  This one looks like the "Walking Dead" series on AMC.  LOL!

Don't laugh at my "Walking Dead" figure!  LOL!

That figure looks good Toshi! He looks like he has some engine greese on his nose though. Mix up a little pink and dab the tip of his nose. Otherwise you have the basics, and some of the more advanced techniques covered already. Your blocking looks good, your colors look about right, your wash has all of the recesses in shadow. Yeah, nothing to be upset with here.

That's a good looking figure. :) Maybe some of my tricks are finding their way over there after all.  :D  Keep that up and you'll be producing some life-like pilots in... what? It takes you about 20 minutes to master a new technique....  Hmmm... have to account for napping..... maybe 24 hours. Yup. 24 hours and you'll be proficient at painting figures.  ;)

Get his nose fixed! He looks great!!  :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
