Fell from the ceiling and are now destroyed!
Posted by Toshi on Friday, July 22, 2016 1:37 AM

I took a nap as I was not feeling well this afternoon.  Suddenly, Mrs. Toshi woke me up as she heard a loud crash only to show me my destroyed Revell 1/32 F-4 Phantom (Broke into a hundred pieces) and my GWH 1/48 P-61 Blackwidow (The entire nose snapped off as that's where I placed several lead fishing sinkers so as not to have a P-61 tail sitter).  So much for the 3M sticker type hooks.  Oh well, the rest of my planes are still holding.

I guess the F-4 was too big and the P-61 had too much lead sinkers yet, I have a huge Revell 1/48 B-24 Liberator, Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster, and a Trumpeter 1/32 Avenger still holding up after more than a year.  Now what do I do?  Did I get mad?  No.  I just cleaned up the mess, knowing I'll rebuild the F-4 and the P-61 better than before.  I went straight into finishing up my newest project, the Academy 1/72 P-51B Mustang.  I'm currently at the decal stage.

Toshi,

That's a real shame!  I've learned never to trust those stick on hooks.  They never seem to hold up very well.

Good luck on restoration!

PS> And don't throw the parts out.  You can always use spares.  Smile

OH NOOOOOO!

That's what I said too, when my F-111 fell from the bench just yesterday. odd how we both had a calamity the same day.

Since mine is in progress and i have not yet installed any small parts, , I'm gonna fix it. The whole front of the plane snapped off aft of the cockpit right through where the heavyest putty was.  I used the laser glue on the canopy prior to the fall and that is still intact though ,so I am impressed with the holding power of that glue.

I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.

Toshi, it's heart breaking to see the parts scattered about on the floor.  I had something similar happen with a B-17.  One of our cats was "involved."  However, it became part of a battle damage repair diorama in it's "second life."  Good luck on what ever you decide to do with it.

That's too bad, Toshi. Sorry to hear.

You didn't specifically mention that you replaced all the rest of the sticky-tape type hooks with real fasteners. You did, or are in the process, right?

That was a rotten thing to have happen when you already were not feeling well, darn it.

Toshi,

Beyond the "Hook" problem which should be easily remedied, I always hang my planes with the thinest steel wire available.  Then carefully hand paint the wire with flat black enamel.   I say this because if anyone uses fishing line, it can degrade after a number of years.   All of my large planes (i.e. Italeri 1/48th scale C130 etc)...are hung this way from screws going into joists.  They will never fall.

We've all droped a model or two. Chin up.

Ouch that really sucks! Sorry about that.

NEVER trust those sticky things. It's a matter of time before the adhesive fails and this happens. Only use secure screwed attachments that are strong and will not fail.

My deepest sympathies for your loss here. Crying You're abetter soul than I in your grace handling this. And as already said here, those kits you can not repair can be stripped of all usable parts for future projects.

Thank you Valkyrie, I'm glad you got to do a diorama with your B-17, my models are far beyond the display stage.

Toshi, I've followed your builds.  With you creative mind and supurb skill, I doubt that there's much you couldn't accomplish with that pile of parts given a little time to think about it.  Yes, it would be a challenge though...

Ouch! Was that the Black Widow you recently completed?

Several years ago, my son called me at work and said I was not going to be happy when I got home.  At the time I had a collection of builds on shelves in my workshop. The shelves were on a wall that also has a door leading inside the house, which of course is opened and closed frequently.  And apparently I did not get the shelves mounted into the studs, so on this day one side of those shelves came loose. I arrived home to find a large mound of shattered plastic. None of the builds were recoverable. I collected all the debris and put that in my stash of old destroyed builds that will be available for salvage if and when I need it.

Now the really cool part. My wife told me I could get all these kits again. Some were out of production, but eBay was there for me. I have replaced each of those I lost that day. I don't believe I have built any yet but eventually I will get around to it.
