Any C-130 experts?
Posted by Keyda81 on Friday, August 5, 2016 10:45 AM

I plan on doing a 1/48 scale C-130.  Waiting for the kit to come in the mall.  It's the Italeri C-130J version.  I would like to make it as close as possible to one of the C-130's that we currently have on base here in Niagara Falls.  I can find reference pictures and such online, but that has raised a few questions.  I have a video of one from our airbase with the tail number 91187 that I took a few weeks ago.  Pic:

I also found a picture of one with the same tail number online from 2009.

Now my question is what is that protrusion on the fuselage right behind the roundel?  It is not on the plane in the pic from 2009.  I want to assume they are 2 different aircraft and they've just used the same tail number.  Any information would be very helpful.  Thank you!

I have one more question as well.  If I'm going to go the route of trying to make the model look like one of our C-130's I'm going to need 4 bladed props.  Is there a kit sold to convert it for the 1/48 scale.  I seen one to convert it to 3 bladed props, but not 4.  Thanks again!  My kit comes in the mail tomorrow, can't wait to get started on it.  :)

Took me about an hour but I eventually found someone who had the attack squadron kit in stock.  So that is ordered.  Still haven't decided which way I'm going to go with this build, accurate or how I feel like it at the time.  Still trying to figure out what those humps are on the side of the fuselage.  I ordered a book, maybe that will shed some light on it.

DIRCM (Directed InfraRed CounterMeasures) - It's an IR missile jamming system.

Is it the DIRCM or LAIRCM (Large Aircraft InfrarRed Counter Measures)?

Hmm, I guess it could be either, couldn't it. I can find references to both acronyms in relation to C130's. I believe LAIRCM is likely to be an evolution of DIRCM.

Hello!

Looks like the aircraft you have on the photos (and it's one number - one aircraft here) was at some point converted from/to the MC-130 version - this version has the additional antenae. As for the props - that might be hard, because stock Italeri 4-blade props looked good for almost everybody. If you started with a C-130H kit, you would get those right out of the box. Your chance would be now to look for Italeri parts that somehow didn't get installed in a kit - maybe buying a kit that was started but not finished, or a glue bomb, or maybe get another C-130H. Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Thank you!  I even had hubby scrounging the internet for an answer, lol.  I just had to know what it was.

I should of done a bit more research before buying a kit, but I did find a four blade prop kit and ordered it.  Now my only other issue is getting more pictures of that particular C-130.  I wonder if I contacted the base of they'd let me come take pictures.

Thank you again everyone!

I could literally spend hours upon hours researching these aircraft.  Tail numbers, registration numbers, years, air wing divisions, etc.  I think I'm going to take some binoculars and see if I can see the tail numbers of the 3 currently on base here.  I also think I may be going a bit overboard.  Embarrassed

Careful now, the security personnel may get suspicious.

Mission accomplished lol.  91188, 19142, and 91187 are currently on base.  91188 is the only one with the Niagara tail art, so I may just pick that one.  Going to see how much photo reference I can find on each one.

Search on the full serial numbers:

89-1187
89-1188
91-9142

The prefix (89 & 91) is the fiscal year in which the aircraft was acquired. Markings may change, but the serial number stays with the aircraft for its entire lifespan.

Looks like your preferred subject (1187) was involved in a mid-air with a UAV in Afghanistan a while back..

I seen that earlier, lol.  I'm wondering if the only one that the base is going to keep is the one with Niagara on the tail.  So I may use that one.  We are supposed to be getting 8 KC-135's this spring.  They are transitioning missions, and sent 4 of our C-130's to Qatar.  They've been flying over Niagara longer than I've been alive, so I kind of feel like I grew up with them in a way.  So I'm sad to see them go, so I need a 1/48 scale hanging from the ceiling!  Big Smile
