1/144 Minicraft P-51D Mustang "Old Crow" Dayam that's tiny!

I finally got one of these things! I really was expecting it to be bigger than it is. I was impressed with the tiny amount of detail, but I did truly expect a little more. So, me being me, I added more detail. Not a whole lot, but enough to give you something to look at up close.

The Cartograph decals were a very pleasant surprise as well! I didn't expect that from a cheapo Minicraft kit in such a minuscule scale. Oh boy are they nice! Fit like a glove on the nose. I've never had 1/48 kits that did that lol.

This kit has convinced me that I seriously need some Microset and sol from this point forward. Repairing those decals that got messed up by my usual LC treatment was very time consuming. Plus the Cartograph decals didn't react well at all, being that they are super fine to begin with.

Building it took no time. Detailing it took no time. Painting was simple. All of those tiny little precision decals.... that took a little time. Especially since I kept melting them ':/

But in the end, after a lot of very gentle handling, I ended up with something that makes me wonder about my sanity and probably a little too proud of the skill that it took to accomplish this little bugger lol!

Remember, this is 1/144th!

In conclusion, this was a really sweet little model. I didn't expect much, but I got something more in the end. I also have the P-47 and I checked, yes the decals are by Cartograph as well.

This is a very challenging scale to work in. But I liked it. This one should spark up conversations with visiting friends and family lol! Its sooo tiny! LMAO!

Have a GREAT Day!! I've got to get back to my (What now seems huge) Spitfire.

P.S. Toshi, if your Lady thinks 1/72 is cute, she'll really get a kick out of these little guys lol!!

This is the first time I've ever seen a 1/144 any aircraft.  I didn't know they existed!  Wow, unreal detail!!!!

I found the little guy and a P-47 in this scale at Hobby Lobby. They look like tiny little toy boxes at the end of the isle lol. But you can take them seriously.

You'd be surprised. I added the vents to the tail section because it only had the spaces but not the vent flaps and I opened up the intake in the nose. All of the gear doors were sanded down because they were overly thick and I added a bit of card stock to the wheel wells and detailed that with some sprue bits.

I added the instrument cowl and the gun sight, seat, and battery box to the pit. It was left completely blank. I couldn't have that, now could I?

The spinner was a tough one to detail. I had to modify the entire hub with card stock to get it mostly correct. It turned out looking good, so I'm not worried about it lol.

It was a fun build, Toshi, but I did have troubles seeing what I was working with half of the time lol. My eyes are not as good as they used to be anymore.

The kit came with morkings for three aircraft. The one you see above, wich is the most complicated, an Austrailian in silver, and a Canadian also in silver. I was very nearly about to choose the Canadian markings, but decided to try this old classic instead. ;)

I don't know if you'd like this scale, but it sure was a blast!

Mike, I have no idea what's going on with multiple copies. They were all certainly cool! Good question, maybe someone on the Forum will know.

lol!

Maybe someone can answer that. I've seen these markings on a "B", "C", and a "D", with every color combination there ever was. Aluminum, O.D., and both. What's up with that?

Keep looking, Max. lol.

Hello Mike!

Nice little model. Sometimes I think those small scales are actually easier to do because you can get away with less detail and the model still looks good. Plus they build quicker and you can easily build a collection of several models - and then that collecion looks spectacular.

As for the "Old Crow" - at first I thought you have made a mistake putting those decals on a D variant - but then I looked up "Bud Anderson" on google and I have found out that there were actually two "Old Crow" Mustangs - One B+Variant and one D+Variant that was OD at first, but then stripped to bare metal. I have two links for you with lots of info, I hope you will ike them:

Wow! Thank you guys! I didn't like how the wash turned out on it because some of the panel lines were not as deep as others, but overall I think its pretty good.

Pawel, thank you for those links!  :)
