Udorn Zipper- 1/48 Monogram F-104C
Posted by stikpusher on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 9:23 PM

After 5+ years from when I started this project, multiple speed bumps, and several sidelinings for various reasons, I am calling this one done. It is Monogram's early 80s issue of their F-104C, which I finished as attached to the 8th TFW in Udorn RTAFB in 1966/1967 during the second deployment of F-104s to that war.

In addition to the basic kit, I used Iliad decals, an Aires replacement seat (to replace the missing kit part that later turned up), some PE mirrors on the canopy hood, added scratch built RHAW antennas on the fuselage and scopes in the cockpit, and some needle file work on the kit afterburner petals to improve that part. I used Humbrol Enamel paints for the SEA camouflage colors.

VERY nice job overall on this cool jet, especially the camo.

Coincidently, I am attempting this very same pattern on my 1/48 F-111E for the first time. I laid down the tan color first trying to AB the pattern freehand ,with my Badger 105,and it was a dismal failure.  It looks like just a bunch of tan blobs even after I lowered the pressure to 7 psi and got in close...oh well. So I guess I'm gonna hafta get the blue tack out and mask everything for the next two colors... sigh...AB ing is not my best skill  lol.

Stik,

This 104 looks outstanding! And I echo what others have said about the SEA camo on the aircraft! Great job!

Jay Jay & Bruce, thank you for the kind words.

Jay Jay, I usually have to go back and do touch ups to clean up any overspray on multi color schemes like this. Especially on the lighter colors, which I lay down first.

Hello!

Lookin' good! I also have a Starfighter to build in 1:72 - I didn't research it yet, though... Did them babies also serve in Vietnam in bare metal? Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

That is so cool, I love it.  It's nice to see camoflauge on the 104.  Five years in the making, an effort well done sir.  Beautiful!

Thanks for all the compliments guys!

Pawel, yes the 104s were in a NMF in their first tour of duty in 1965 at DaNang. For their second deployment they got warpaint.

I agree with the rest of the coments, outstanding! I noticed the blue and white stripes on the pitot tube, never seen that color combo before on a pitiot tube.

Man, if I had a quater for everytime I saw someone burn their hand or fingers checking the tube on a T-38A to see if it was cool enough to put on the cover I would be a rich man.......

Again, well done!

Hey, it looks perfect to me!  One that I would proudly display on my shelves.  That Monogram F-104 was a fun kit to build.  No real issues that I can recall and I don't recall using a whole lot of filler on it either.  I think I used some around the closed gun panel but that was it.  You've got a great looking Starfighter there, Stik!!!

Thank you for all the kind feedback guys!

Kevin, if I had not come across that color photo that I posted showing the blue & white striping, I never would have painted it that way. I was just gonna go with the same green as on the radome. I never realized that the pitot heated up that much from wind friction, but that makes sense when you think about it...

Eric, it is a fun kit indeed. Any issues in this build were self induced. I may have to do one of their G's. I have plenty of decals left over on the sheet for other Starfighters.

Gamera, this one was way overdue to finish up. Now to keep the bugs and dust away until I can get into IPMS again...

Hello!

Thanks for the info on the NMF Starfighters. As for the Pitot tubes - I believe they are electrically heated to make sure icing doesn't clog it. I mean I heard about the tube being hot on a Seahawk - and I don't think air friction could do that.

Have a nice day

Not wind, anti-ice......On the T-38 pilots had a check list after landing. If they turn off the pitot heat at EOR (end of runway) it cools off by the time they taxi back, if they forget....

I would spit on it (after the pilots left) and if it sizzled, I waited.
