Andy

Yeah - I'm planning to go to Syrcon, and if I do I'll definitely enter something.

I think of the "Cons" as "shows" more than "contests".  I don't really care about winning awards.  (don't get me wrong - its nice to have someone say "that's nice !")  But mostly I just like to see built models and I figure other people do too - so I bring 'em.

I helped judge a contest one time and I didn't like doing it that much.  There are some times when its easy and you can detect poor technique that makes one model better than another.  The hard part is judging between models that were both made with great skill - but just with different techniques.  Or between a super new-tool kit with tons of aftermarket detail and a guy who re-scribed a kit from a 40 year old mold and scratch built detail with plastic card and strip.  Or between a piece that looks like it just rolled out of the factory hangar versus one that is heavily worn and weathered.  As a judge - you have to . . .  Judge !    Yuck !

One cool thing that happened at this show is that it was the first time I can remember where I really started to be able to identify some models as the work of a certain person in our club - without knowing before hand.  I found myself saying - "Ooooo! - that F-16 is definitely a Kozlowski", and "I bet Phil built that P-47."   It was pretty cool.

Hope to see you at Syrcon.  I'll do my best to be there.  Don't come empty handed !

Gamera

Yeah both of those P-47s are great kits. The Hasegawa kit is fantastic, I think I compared it once to a Cadillac- the Tamiya one is even better, sorta a Rolls Royce if you will. Wink I think you'll be happy with both.

The 1/32nd Spit is a pretty old kit. I built one back in the early '90s and I think it was pretty old back then. I don't remember any real issues. I think it's still decent if not great.

The 190 I have no idea. The ProModeler stuff seems weird to me. Some are brilliant and some are 'what were they thinking!?!?'

Thanks for the feedback Gamera! Yeah I'm looking forward to the P-47's. I plan to do both for the Thunderbolt GB, I may even try my hand at Alclad on one or both of themIndifferent

The 1/32 Spit sounds like the perfect test bed for scratchbuilding/panel line rescribing. We'll have to see how brave I get LOL!

I've started on the FW190 and I can tell you it isn't a bad little kit at all. Decent detail in the cockpit, especially since you can't see much. Pretty good surface detail and fit is ok, so far I've only had to use putty at the wing root on one side. I have noticed a few errors in the directions but for around the $2.00 I paid for it I won't complainBig Smile

Congrats on the medals Chris! I've been thinking of joining the Rochester chapter. It's a little bit of a drive from where I am but it'd be nice to attend a build night every once in a while.

I also plan to go to SYRCON this year (one benefit of living between Rochester and Syracuse, neither is too far away:). Do you plan on going to Syrcon or entering any builds in it?

Andy,

I'm thinkin' You must be referring to the 1/32 F-18.   When you read my post you'll see . . . That was one of the models I DIDN'T get a pic of.   ( I know . . .    I know . . .    What a pinhead ! )

Yeah - I'm a member of the Rochester IPMS group.  In the last 2 years my attendance at meetings has been pretty low just due to work and life in general.  But I made the last meeting, a recent build night, and the show.  We'll see if I can make it more often now.

I had five entries.  My 1/72 Hurricane took third in the single engine prop category and my B-25 took first in the 1/72 Multi-engine category.   Frankly, I was surprised to come away with any awards.  The tables were full of really nice pieces.  I also entered a 1/72 Harrier GR.1, a 1/72 Spit Mk. V, and a 1/48 Spit Mk. XII.  There were alot of incredible small, medium, and large scale jets.  Many more than I have seen in previous shows.

Well heck if I would have known it was only a 2 hour drive away from me!  You'd think I live in bubble.  I never know when anything is going on near me.

Chris, I'd love to see those pics! Yeah there was a lot of great builds there. I really liked the Tamiya 1/32 that was there...a real beauty! Did you enter any builds?

Are you a member of the Roceshter IPMS or just from the area? If you don't mind me asking? :)

Hello Andy (from a fellow Rocon-ite),

I also employed my hunting and gathering skills to come away with a slightly more modest haul from Rocon.  There were certainly alot of good deals to be had !  For some reason I excercised more self control than I might have on any other day.  I spotted THE ONE kit that I went in looking for right away, the 1/72 Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant - along with a bonus. . .  a sweet set of XtraDecals to go with it.  I also picked up a 1/72 Academy Hurricane Mk 2c.  All this for around $15.  Very good deal I think.

Regarding your 1/72 Hasegawa P-47 . . .   I'm most of the way through mine right now.  No significant fit issues at all.  In my opinion, the weakness of the kit is in the cockpit and wheel well detail.  The cockpit is very basic with no floor or sidewall detail.  The seat looks rather clunky.  The Instrument panel is a rather simple decal.  The exterior surface detail is crisp and understated compared to many other manufacturers, but it's there.

In another post I'll put up the limited pics that I took before my camera battery died on Sunday.  There was a lot of fine work on display.

The Tamiya builds itself. The Hasegawa P-47 is a great kit. The only concern is the antenna and guns are molded on so be careful you don't break them off.

I built the Tamiya  jug awhile ago and found it trouble free including the decals.

Hey all, here is what I picked up over the weekend. I was really happy to find the Tamiya P-47D as I had my eye out for one to build for the Thunderbolt GB. Didn't see it till the second trip around and I got it for a pretty good price I think.

Has anyone built any of these kits and is there anything I should watch out for? From everything I've heard the Tamiya makes for a nice build, my only question is should I be looking for aftermarket decals as I know how Tamiya decals can be?

The others I know less about. I opened up the Hasegawa P-47 and it looks like a nice little kit, same as the FW190. The 1/32 does have the raised panel lines so I may use it as a test for rescribing and some scratchbuilding but we'll have to see about thatBig Smile Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
