1/48 Hasegawa F-86 F Sabre 39th FIS John F. Bolt's "Darling Dottie"
Posted by lawdog114 on Monday, October 10, 2016 3:28 AM

Here's another one I whipped up recently (before the Mustangs).  It's the Hasegawa F-86 F Sabre in the 39th FIS markings of "Darling Dottie", flown by Lt. Colonel John F. Bolt in Korea.  Bolt flew under Pappy Boyington in WW2 Pacific flaming 6 zeros then again in Korea downing 6 Migs in "Mig Alley". Bolt is the only US Marine to achieve ace status in two wars and the only Marine "jet" fighter ace.

This was my second Hasegawa Sabre in a few month span so it went fairly quick.  On this turkey I didn't add enough nose weight so the front wheel will need to nailed down.....Angry.   I should throw a ton of fishing weights down the intake and add the red plug.  Anyways, I added a Legend seat, PE instrument panel and Eduard wheels.  Nothing too fancy.  The decals were from Warbird and were extremely fragile.  I had a few hold my breath moments.  The stripes and checkers were painted on in lieu of decals.

Thanks for looking...

F-86s look good at any scale. They look fast when setting still. Nice job on this one, especially the detail on the skin and panels which I have not mastered. Excellent job!

PS---Nice history lesson too, which is one of the reasons to build models.

Wow, that is an incredible Sabre you have there!  Excellent work on the NMF.  My all-time favorite jet fighter.  She just looks like a fast plane.  Thanks for sharing.

That surely is a beaut, Joe.

I agree 120% on the exterior finish. I've seen these in thier boxes for too many decades, never really knew what I'd do with one. My mentor just showed me. :)

I'm fiddling with my first NMF (a P51) either ever, or in 45 yrs (can't recall if I ever hit an exterior with a can of aluminum spray as a kid or not). If I end up 10% of what you have here, I'll be pretty happy.

What kind of plane is it?

Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.

Every build a work of art!

Very nicely done!  Looks fast standing still, but like it has been used a few times blasting Migs from the sky.  Great job, and an inspiration for me to try my hand on a NMF.  Only had tried 2, a B-36 using Testors rattle cans and a hand painted F-86, which I'm not that proud of.  The paint never dried.  Oh, well, better luck next time.

Another excellent one in the log book, looks super phast just sitting there Joe. If you would please, what was the paint and clear coat system, also the primer?

I was running through my brain, the way a checker board pattern would be applied with an airbrush and tape. Nope, nothing yet. Clever guy, you are.

Thanks for the post and photos.

Thanks for the kind words all.

Patrick, I use alclad Duraluminum then tape off various panels and use different shades of Alclad. Some get dark aluminum, others semi matte or just plain aluminum.

Regarding the painted checkers, I used the kit decal as a size reference then cut out individual "squares" of Tamiya tape which where placed on the plane. Then the area was sprayed black.

Thanks, Joe - My old fumbly and shaky fingers are no longer up to that task with the tape squares, it's either decals or skip checker boards for me.

Just crazy good!

You've probably answered the question I asked in your other post regarding what NMF paint(s) you used for your Mustangs. I suppose they're the same paints you used here.

Thanks guys....

Indeed Mike, it's all just different shades of alclad. I love that stuff and really haven't found anything better.  I use it over their grey primer.

I can't believe that I haven't added an F-86 to my stash yet as I really like the plane's looks. You did a beautiful job on that one, Joe. No surprises there.

I met a gentlemen a few weeks back that was a crew chief on the F-86 when it was first being developed. He was involved in the early "secret" testing that it went through. I really gleaned a lot of wonderful information from the man about the plane. He is a modeler too and we had a long conversation. It's always great to meet new folks with such interesting backgrounds and similar interests.

Beautiful model! I've always loved the look of those 1950s-era fighter jets and the colorful finishes, even if they did say loud and clear, "Here I am! Shoot me down!"

Really great build and lovely finish. I love that you painted on the stripes and checkerboard.

The base looks good as well. Your bases are always really nice--just enough of an environment to hint at context but not a whole involved diorama rigmarole which can easily overwhelm the model. I'm thinking about copying that (following your excellent tutoriel) for my F4F.

thanks!

That's a really nice looking plane. I love the way those F-86's looked. How did you make the base?

Your comments and questions are always welcome.
