Revell 1/48 F-100D Super Sabre for the Museum.

This is a memorable aircraft for me in that I saw it in action with live ordnance. A firepower demonstration for the then Sec. of Defense Mcnamara at Ft. Riley Ks and I was near the Forward air controler calling the shots. Four F-100s came over a hill under fluffy clouds and blue sky in formation and struck a target with napalm about 400 yards from us. I could feel the heat. Sec. Mcnamara and I were impressed! LOL! The F-100s quickly disappeared as as the FAC called in a new target and reappeared coming almost straight down beteen the clouds while releasing live bombs. Another target from the FAC and they struck old tanks and artillery pieces with rockets. Very impressive!

I was also fortunate to have seen the Air Force Thunderbirds perform with F-100s. They were extremely agile and powerful and I might add, Loud! Again, I was impressed! So now you see why this was a must build for the museum.

If you should build this kit there is a glaring error in it that I didn't see until after I was finished. On the main landing gear they have the brake plumbing facing forward which shoud be facing aft. I think the parts will work right, it's the instructions that are wrong.

Also, I actually try to do a fair job on the cockpits even though most of my aircraft are displayed canopy closed. I did remove the canopy for one interior shot. Interiors always are fun to do and look great until installed but are part of the process.

Anyway here it is, the next to the last one of Max's museum but I do have a few on the shelf to build. Check it out I always say.

Gotta love those Revell century series planes!  Excellent work on the Hun, Max.  I've nothing but good reviews of the kit and I can't wait to get my hands on one.  Seeing great builds such as yours always give me inspiration to build one.  I want to thin down my small (20+) stash first but Revell's F-100 is definitely on my "to do" list.  Hopefully it'll come out looking as nice as yours.

Nice looking Hun, and it looks like you tackled that nasty forward fuselage seam with ease.  Quick question, I seem to recall a large arresting hook on the bottom of the aircraft.  Did the one you modeled not have that, or were they installed only on some?

Ah, you caught me John, When shooting the underside I noticed the holes for the arresting hook. After a brief search I did find the hook and I don't remember if I left it off on purpose or forgot it on final assembly. It's back on the to-do list and nice catch. I was wondering who or if anyone would notice that! LOL!

Thanks Johnny, The Museum is really just my semi-clutterd office filled with models and other hobbies and professions. Not many victims can be lured to the Museum. It's great to have the Forum to share with other modelers each others work. Thanks for looking!  Smile

Very nice! I love the lines of the Hun and the Monogram kit captures them nicely. Much better than the Trumpeter kit I built. Early huns weren't fitted with the arresting hook, sometime around '63 maybe they got them?

I forgot to mention that I've even sat in an F-100. While going to college in Wichita Ks I worked in a Texaco gas station with an airman from the airbase that mechaniced B-47s. He got permission to take me on the base. There was a B-47 that we crawled around in and an F-100 parked beside it. He secured pemission for me to set in it also. Mighty exciting times for a model builder and aircraft nut at the time. Just another reason to build the F-100 for the Museum even though I'd built the first Revell F-100 thru F-105 century series as a kid. Just a few more memories!

Max, I built a Monogram hun decades ago and I remembered the hook.  It was an interesting hook compared to many, very long and flat.  Glad I made you laugh.

OK, I can't get away with anything on the Forum with all of these expert eyes watching! LOL! I did find the hook and tail drag bumper and properly installed them for the picky. Silly me thought no one would notice and I did only after it was posted. All is well.

The tail hook assembly is slightly off-center on the aircraft.When I flew them on combat missions, they were removed.The monogram model is the most correct you can get .The Trumpeter model needs lots of work to make it close to the real aircraft.Canopy,wings ,and aft end issues.After market items can help the Trumpeter kit .

Also the monogram kit has raised panel lines which is not on the real aircraft.Just small portions of raised rivets throughout the body surfaces.

Hey Silver, thanks for your response, The F-100 is one of my favorites and it must have been quite the experience to pilot one. Seeing them in serious armed action, flying as a Thunderbird, along with being the first USAF fighter capable of supersonic speed in level flight, and even setting in one made a believer out of me. Even the F-107 was basicly an F-100 update. A good design for sure.

I hear you loud and clear on the fit issues. Revell has been known to get certain details right when it comes to aircraft models but their fit issues have got to be the worst I've seen by model manufacturers with the older kits. Alot of their newer releases (NOT reboxings or re-pops with a different set of decals) , particularly in 1/32 scale, have been a ton better in that regard.
