New project...... B24h 767th diorama
Posted by BEDLAM on Sunday, January 15, 2017 9:04 AM

Ok guys I'm back hiatus..... after completing my last project (Huey uh1-d here http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/16/t/170887.aspx ) I have decided to do another diorama this time a B-24h 767th squadron set at Torretta Field (my wife's grandfather was a nose gunner on ship 65) photos will follow during WIP

Items building..... Revell 1:48 B-24d (with Koster nose conversion.... eBay find) Tamiya cargo truck, Tamiya Fuel Truck, Tamiya Staff car..... Tractor from kit and trailer for bomb transportation.... plus figures from Verlinden.....

Just a couple of questions to start....

1. What would you suggest to use as a plane stand I know Torreta didn't have concrete stands what would they have used and suggestions on what product to use to recreate that.

2. I'm having trouble getting in touch with Bill Koster.... is he still selling.... if not or I'm unable to get in contact... does anyone else make 1/48 vacform canopies and gun turrets?

Wiki for the Foggia airfield complex.  It had two PSP runways.  Then use Google Images for Torretta and the pertinent B-24 BG of which there were two.

Ian, from research done, I would recommend using the Monovell J model instead of the D.  The H was the forerunner and added a lot of the features of the J.  From what I can tell, the Monovell J is a late model J with the Emerson front turret.  Other people who have built it can confirm whether it is a early, middle J with the Consolidated front turret, or a late J with the Emerson which you need.  Post your serial number to see what block H it is from as there were a lot of exterior block changes done.

On the left is the Verlinden 2829 bomb trailer..... on the right is my scratch built based on that.... (some adjustments needed)(not paying $18 for an extra trailer if I can build it from scrap)........... Btw what are the colors for ammo crates during WW2 USAAF)

Ok as Photobucket decided to mess me around..... here is the progress so far..... all vehicles have been finished.... and there is a rough layout of diorama on a tempory board... estimated finished project will be between 26"square and 29"square (Lucite case estimate between $190 and $230)

Actually your bomb trailers are modern 60's+ in design.  You need an M-5 bomb trailer or these low-boy trailers:

Another thing is that you won't find pallets laying around as forklifts were not as prevalent as today.  They were a specialized piece of equipment only used in warehouses, supply dumps, or docks.

Thanks rich great info But Damn it....... oh well I'll get rid of the pallets...... but I'll keep the trailers (I spent too much time on them)....... I have seen images of the larger trailers on UK Airfields circa 1943/4.(I know this is Torretta and the Italy campaign though).... but I do bow down to you guys experience and references....... do most of the other details look ok though........

Say Bedlam. If you don't mind my asking. What did you use to cut out the treads and wheels on the tractor?

Hi Greatmaker Yeah no probs.... I used a micro drill on a Hand mini Chuck..... drill around the profile like fret work.... then used a brand new #11 blade to remove the plugs...... then file and sand..... makes a big difference..... (was thinking of using styrene rod or tube to get the Axels right.... but as this is going to be static I didn't bother).... hope that helps
