Kyle my friend, very nice brother ! I dont know how you do all that fine detailing on such a small model. I know that it would be impossible for me.  Dale

Those little circles in the port side rear glass are open ports to access the fuel and glycol filler caps. Those are not lights lol. The front one should be black and the rear one should be aluminum.

The little circles in the fuselage in front of the "155" are formation lights and those should be blue.

Otherwise this build is looking great and I'm a little excited to see it completed.  :)

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40 build, and this is what he said, “I got the rear glass fit and glued in, and attached the canopy to the P-40. This was a bit frustrating because the rear sections sat too proud of the fuselage. I had to file the bottom edge and check the fit repeatedly until they sat in enough to get the main canopy on. Fortunately, Airfix provides dimples on the inside of the glass to allow painting of the lights and have it come out cleanly. I just have to re-attach one of the flaps and fabricate and install gun barrels and the P-40 will be done.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD152 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD153 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD154 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD155 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD156 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “I trimmed the canopy for the P-40. I think it'll be ok, but on the next ones I think I'm going to try using metal foil to mask as I have trouble seeing the frame when I'm cutting it. If I get time, that will be painted olive drab tomorrow as well.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD150 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD151 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD152 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “Just a quick update. I got the exhausts put in and finally unmasked the cockpit. Some minor touching up to do but most of it will be hidden underneath the canopy. I'm close to the finish line on this one. Next couple days I'll get back on the Jug and start filling seams and masking in preparation for primer. On a side note, I appreciate your patience. It seems as though lately I haven't had very much time to model and it frustrates me a bit. Things will smooth over soon and I'll be able to get back to my steady pace.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD144 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD145 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD146 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD147 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Generally, I personally don't worry about it, but its a great way to show a lot of weight on the aircraft should you choose to modify the kit parts. For most static displays the kit height is usually acceptable.  :)

Pat, strut compression is already shown on kit gear. I have to add some strut to show an uncompressed olio if I'm showing a take off or landing.

Agreed about the nice job.

Wow,

That looks phenominal.  It's hard to believe it's 1/72nd scale.  I see that he has flattened the lower edge of the tire a little to reflect the effects of the weight of the plane, when sitting on the ground.

Out of curiousity, as a general question to the plane model builders here, I was wondering if when building any plane, would strut compression be noticeable as well for a plane on the ground, or is it not enough to be noticeable?

I can hardly wait for a final reveal. That PE really adds a lot to make it look larger than it is. :)

Looks like you're going to be really happy with this. Any plans on adding #160 to the collection with the 1/48 kit too?

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “I got the gear doors painted and attached in the P-40. I also put the gear strut supports on. They were painted the same aluminum as the gears. I also put the linkages on that control the trim tabs and the rudder hinge. The sights went on up front. These will get painted tonight in preparation for an overall flat clear. I broke one of the guns off, so I decided to remove the other three and will make replacements from a hypodermic syringe. I didn't not it until after the pictures but there's a small point on the rudder hinge, that will get filed off tonight.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD143 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD135 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD136 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD137 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD138 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD139 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD140 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD141 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD142 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “I sprayed the inside of the flaps and attached them to the wings. They were bent at the same time so the angles would match. I attached the doors for the tail gear. I dunked the canopy into future floor polish, it pooled a bit so I'm going to remove it tonight and give the application a second go. I also bent the inner gear doors and just now I hit them with primer. Tonight, I plan to spray them grey, paint the insides and hopefully get them attached.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD125 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD126 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD134 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD127 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD128 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD129 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD130 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD131 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “Quick update I got the P-40 standing on her own legs. I took out what I could for height but it wasn't much, any more and they wouldn't have any strength.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD121 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD122 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD123 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Thanks Guys. Yeah, Kyle is quite the modeler. I am really impressed with his work. What he did with my Merit 1:35 G-5 MTB is simply amazing, as the USS SAUCY! Funny thing ... the P-40 is the same kit which was reviewed in this issue of FSM. You know, I've always wanted Taylor's 12/7/41 P-40 ... and now, I am getting it, thanks to Kyle. I love the cockpit, flaps, and wheel-well PE detail set and I like the STARFIGHTER DECALS decals. The P-51B isn't mine. I already have one. Marked up as LT. Alden E. Smith's G4*K "American Girl" (built by Bob Cicconi). Alden was a family friend, he was married to my mother's best friend. I used to (as a small kid) call him "the Red Baron".

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “Quick update, I've sprayed clear over the plane to seal in the decals. Tonight, I’m hoping to mask and spray the green on the inside of the wheel wells and the flap bays. I applied the decals to the prop as well. This is ready for another sealer of clear.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD114 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD115 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD116 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD117 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD118 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Kyle sent me an update on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “Decals including all the nomenclature are on. It occurred to me after the main issue with the bottom decal was in the clear section, so I opted to very carefully cut away the clear leaving the letters. I also burnished the decals into the panel lines. It's officially ready for a layer of gloss clear, then in a few days I'll do the zinc on the interior parts.” Here are some photos: P40BUILD109 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD111 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD110 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD112 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD113 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

Kyle sent me an update last night, on my Pearl Harbor P-40 and my RAF P-47, and this is what he said, “All the parts here received a coat of Tamiya white primer. The prop for the P-47 was based in black and is ready for clear and decals. The spinner to the P40 was painted olive drab. I primed an assortment of gear doors. The P-40 doors and flaps were painted the underside grey, and the P-47 doors will be painted when the underside of the Jug is painted gray…” Here are some photos: P47BUILD43 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P47BUILD44 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD108 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD107 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr P40BUILD106 by Tim Connelly, on Flickr Tim

If Kyle hasn't found a way to fix that silvering of the decals yet, let him know that a little watered down Vallejo clear gloss around the edges may eliminates the silvering.

Either that, or the extreme answer is a very restrained usage of liquid cement. It will work very well, but it can smear the decal pigments and cause some touch-ups to have to be made.

Ive used both methods effectively.

Kyle sent me an update earlier today, on my Pearl Harbor P-40, and this is what he said, “Here are photos of the decals. Solvaset didn't work as well as I hoped but I was more careful applying the 155s. He's doing it as Ken Taylor's #155 from December 7th, 1941.
