Mopar Madness

You can definitely see the finish line now!

Yes, indeed! I've got the last of the small bits in primer and I'm ready to decal this turkey.

Glad you brought this one back to life. I can't believe it's been four years. Keep at it! =]

I know. It amazes me too. Time has flown by and last year seems like a bad dream only to wake up feeling like you're still in the dream and confused by what is plainly in front of your eyes.

What a ride.

Well this is a good one to work with. I regard it as the best P-40B OoB without modifications. If my pictures hadn't vanished you'd see how well Airfix did with the engineering. It paints up very well and the IP decal fits like a glove.

I highly recommend this kit.

Thanks for the confidence boost, Jim. I'm doing my homework on that and again I'm reminded that it's 75% surface preparation. I need to find something I can lightly buff the surface with, without removing the paint and I should be good. For the record I'm always trying to cut corners and it's always biting me in the a$$.

And I'm using Dupli-Color clear cote. Not really the best for models, but it's tough stuff, acrylic, and has a nice gloss finish without a lot of applications. And then you can buff it out lol. All I has to do is give it 24 hours to harden up and it's bullet proof.

Looking great as usual! Your paint jobs always look great. Is this a problem that's just started up? To me, it looks like the paint needs a bit of thinning before spraying. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, just my 2 cents worth.

I pulled it down, dusted this one off, and got to work on painting the undersides today.

One of these days I'm going to figure out how to get this stuff smooth. Hmm

Thank you, Steve. Unfortunately I was using a free photo hosting site that went belly up and the old work phone I had the original pictures on was returned and wiped.

So those pictures are gone and I figure I've lost a lot of progress pictures in many threads because of it.

M. Brindos

Thanks!

Wish the rest of the pictures hadn't vanished from the thread. I had some really good ones of the progress up to this point.

Mike,

Great to see you back on this. I wish the earlier photos were still available too.

Well I've finished the upper camoflage scheme and I had many corrections while underway. Masking and painting a section at a time really helped me get the scheme pretty close to the instructions. Masking with silly putty isn't easy. One stray finger and you squish things out of shape.

I hand painted the pattern on the tail. It was too intricate for the masking process I used and it would've taken an hour to mask it with tape.

I'm very happy with the results!

Paint!

Another ancient resurrection of mine because I wanted to paint something and this one has been begging for it for a long time now.

I've been masking it one section at time so this is going slow.

For this session I've chosen Vallejo's USAAF Brown, USAAF Green, and Curtis Grey for the undersides. Proper period colors for this build as far as I know.

More to come later, I think.

I've been so busy with life I didn't notice you were building another P-40. Looking good, Mike.

Still the same one I've been working on since last December lol. I'm just taking my time. ;)

Bbvallot, Bish, I need to get some supplies before I can start the painting. Just have to wait a couple more weeks for a paycheck lol. I want to do it right and I've lost my circle template.

Mike, I think Airfix is discontinuing the Zero/P40 DD, so grab it soon. Amazon has them for $14, not a bad price for a double kit.

You've got me eyeing up their 1/48 P40!

I hope they still have some available in a couple weeks! Do eeet! Buy that sucker!

M. Brindos

Thanks, Joe!

U.P. I'm going to eventually get that DD kit. That little P-40 really looks cool, and it comes with a Zero! That's a nice combo. :)

The 1/48 is a great kit and very much worth building. As you can see it even looks good in primer lol.

Oh, and Klinger couldn't fly lol! Feather Boa? Hopefully some paint can make it look like a fur trimmed collar lol.

Looks great! As usual, your pilot figure is inspiring. I'm working on the 1/72 Warhawk in the Dogfight Double boxing. It's a nice kit, goes together easily. The pilot figure is lacking, the molding looks like he's wearing a feather boa. Did Corporal Klinger fly a P40B at Pearl Harbor? No big deal, it will look fine at that scale and with the canopy closed. I'm going to have to try the 1/48 version.

Thanks, Frank. I'm looking forward to building this kit again, but I think I have it in me to build the Revel one last time.

You will love how much of an improvement this kit is over the old Revell though. It's much more enjoyable to build. ;)

I just closed the lid on the Revell/Monogram P-40B for the last time. I just can't bear to work on it anymore. After what I've read about the Airfix P-40B, I can't wait to get my hands on one...or two...or three.

Mike, your build is looking just great!

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...
