P-40 Checkertails WIP
Posted by rooster513 on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 7:19 AM

Hey all, I decided to do a WIP on my latest project. This is Cobi's boxing of the P-40 with the 325th FG Checkertails Clan markings. What?...never heard of Cobi as a kit maker? Well you're in for a treatWink

This is the first kit my wife has gone out on her own to pick out for me, and I think she nailed it! It combines two of my interests, WWII era aircraft and...legos!!!! Big Smile Here it is, 265pcs of childhood nostalgia!

The parts come packaged in several bags which is nice. But these are legos, so what's the first thing I do...rip those bags open and pour all the contents onto the coffee table of course lol. They're legos...it's just what you do!

I'm actually pretty impressed with the engineering of this kit and the instructions are really well done. Lays everything out very clearly...

The fit of the parts are great, all the parts just seem to snap into place (sorry I had to say it)Stick out tongue  So after 30min-1hr of work I'm happy to say I got the fuselage together with only one mistake where I put the wrong color piece in a few steps back and had to take it apart. Which I must say is a heck of a lot easier when they haven't been cemented togetherWink

Some of the gaps may need a little filler lol but it's coming together nicelyBig Smile

I think I would have killed for this kind of Lego kit when I was a kid but back in the Stone Age we only had basic blocks or perhaps a set or two to build something like a boat.

This looks like a neat project (and I may just need to pick one of these up when I get back into the work force).

Aggieman, I know what you mean, I'm only 30 and I had nothing like this when I was younger that I can remember. I built many a airplane with basic blocks too... I just used my imagination. They seem to put out mostly boxed kits these days instead of the variety pack of basic blocks.

Alright I've finished this one up. While not a true "kit" it was fun little build. It has some pretty cool features and when all built up it looks the part for sure. The price point isn't too bad and would make for an awesome toy for a kid! As you'll see in the pics, it has moveable flaps and a positionable landing gear, which is really coolYes

I didn't include a pic but it also comes with a nice stand and nameplate. Thanks for looking!

That looks pretty damn good. Might want to think about some filler on the underside though, loks like you have one or two sink holes there Wink

They don't have a Stuka in the range do they.

I remember back in the days when all there were was just blocks, and you were lucky to make a square tower looking building.  If even that.  LOL!  You have such a great and unique build sir!  What an awesome kit.

The posable landing gear did it for me! Nothing better than Lego's. How long did it take you to finish it?

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Legos were introduced to the USA in 1961 although they were invented in 1932. In 1961 I had other interests - I'd just flunked out of my first undergraduate institution (Georgetown U.) and was working as an elevator boy in my hometown (NYC). My interests were basically girls, girls, girls at that time. However, had a kit like the one you've just built been available back then I think I probably would have thought about buying it. Unfortunately I didn't have two dimes to rub together back then.

That's such a neat little kit - I hope it inspires some kids to get into more detailed modeling.

Gotta admit that is pretty sweet. Camo colors are darn near dead on too. Thanks for sharing.

I wasn't actually expecting you to say they did. Gonna have to get one oif those. I don't think we have that brand over here, i'll do a sdearch and if i can't find one, i think one of those will be winging its way from Europe. Cheers Andy.

Yeah they have a whole "Small Army"Big Smile

I believe Cobi is a Polish company so it should be a little cheaper for you to get your hands on one across the pond. My wife picked this one up on ebay for a pretty good price.

Ends up being around a 1/32 scale when finished...at least this one was.

I was thinking the same thing Mike. I may pick up one for my nephews. They are on the younger side but would make for a nice little challange, forcing them to follow the instructions and think it through. Plus they will have a killer toy when finished!

Ye, for a minute i thought they were American, then i noticed the Euro pricetag. Thats a pretty good scale. And in the armour section they have a 251.
