1/32 Eduard BMW 801 Radial (FW 190 Powerplant)
Posted by lawdog114 on Friday, February 24, 2017 3:05 AM

Here's my attempt at the new 1/32 Eduard resin BMW 801 engine designed for Revell's F-8 kit.  Those who followed my Fw190 F-8 build know it was originally supposed to be incorporated into that model, but the eventual owner decided it was too detailed to bottle up into the cowl.  He now has plans to display it separately.

Other than all the resin sanding and cutting, which I truly hate, it wasn't too bad.  You just have to follow the instructions. I added the cylinder oil lines with rod styrene.

I just painted it by using photo reference.  I got a kick out of the fire extinguisher.  I take it these 2000 hp monsters were prone to fires?  I didn't particularly like the PE wiring.....too flat. I built up copper paint to make them appear round.  I should have just ran my own wiring.   A drybrushing and wash really brought out the details.

Thanks for looking.  Please excuse the "screenshot" format.  I have been experimenting photography with my I-phone.  Dare I say it's doing a better job than my Nikon??

Very nice.  Love doing engines.  Will this be incorporated into a plane, or left for display by itself?

I have built several of the Williams Brothers large scale engine kits, and have done a couple of large scale scratch engines.  I wish Williams would re-release their old Wright Whirlwind- it is the only one of their old line I have not built, but it seems to be about the last to see released since they came under new management :-(

Outstanding ! !

Tis a shame that most folks don't know what is behind that cooling fan . Nice work . Now, are you going to put it near the plane ?

That is just crazy nice work, Joe. I still can't see the flat wire you speak of, they look round to me. NICE!! And the fire extinquisher, ya, I'm gonna grab that while the engine is burning.

Thanks everyone.  Your very kind.  Don, It's apparently going to be displayed in it's own case.

Thanks TB...Indeed, the 801 was an engineering marvel.  It's my understanding that BMW detuned it to extend the service life.  They made 28,000 of these.  Talk about insult to injury.....Bang Head.  It's a commision build and not something I'd normally build on my own.  It was fun pushing my limits tough.

Thanks..I guess it worked then...I put like three coats of copper paint on them.  Granted these weren't as bad as some others.  I have since learned the "extiguisher" is an oil filter.  Shows you how much I know Dunce

Thanks again all for the nice words...

I wonder if the fire extinguisher was incorporated as a result of the prototype burning up on the ground. I know the cooling fan was part of the lessons learned from that.

Great job on the engine. That thing is gorgeous. I feel like if I were ever to do one in the plane, it would have to be a aintenance diorama with the cooling fan and prop off and all panels open. I like the idea of a separate display for it. Reminds me of museum displays.

Well done, Joe!  What a dense and compact engine that was.
